Chinese Economy and Society - Offered Spring 2013

Course Objective and Description

The People’s Republic of China (PRC) is now the world’s second largest economy by nominal GDP and by purchasing power parity (PPP) after Unite States. Chinese culture is one of the world’s oldest cultures. China’s influence in the world economy and in international affairs have been growing very rapidly over the past few decades, which to some is a threat, to others a promise, but for the most, it is a mystery.

With a briefly review on the development of Chinese economy and the Chinese Society, this course aims to understand the challenges and the opportunities of China’s economic rise, to know the changing of Chinese social and cultural life at large, from a historical and dynamic perspective. It combines economic studies, management studies, and society studies and engages course participants in an interdisciplinary study.

This course will examine the issues like ‘Threat or Promise: Chinese economic development in global context’, ‘Chinese economic reform: the past and the present’, ‘Challenges and opportunities of China’s economic Rise’, ‘FDI and OFDI in China: How to do business with Chinese, and ‘Walking in China: Chinese Society and traditional Culture’. The lectures will make use of written sources, reports, news, audio-visual materials, and the results of research.
