Achieving the headline goal of the Paris Agreement requires a rapid decarbonisation of the energy system, which can be achieved by electrified systems with high shares of variable renewable energy sources such as wind and solar energy. In such systems, weather and climate have a crucial influence on energy supply and demand, from solar and wind generation to heating and cooling demands. Furthermore, anthropogenic climate change is expected to have complex impacts on future weather-dependent energy systems.
At this seminar, we will share our research on designing weather and climate resilient future energy systems as part of SPATUS and the Departments of Mathematics and Technology Systems.
Speakers
Marianne Zeyringer is an Associate Professor in Renewable Energy Systems at the Department of Technology System. She leads the Energy Systems Modelling Group where they are developing models to support the transition to net-zero, renewable based energy systems. Their focus is on designing systems that are weather and climate resilient as well as socially just and desired. Marianne is the PI of the recently granted UiO:Energy Convergence Environment EMPOWER and part of SPATUS. She holds a joint doctoral degree in Energy Systems Analysis&Modelling from Utrecht and BOKU University and has previously worked at the UCL Energy Institute, the European Commission Joint Research Centre and been a visiting researcher at IIASA and the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab.
Fred Espen Benth is a Professor at the Department of Mathematics. His research is focused on stochastic analysis and modeling and managing risk in finance and energy. Currently, he is the PI of the Thematic Research Group SPATUS, which is funded by UiO:Energy, and part of the UiO:Energy Convergence Environment EMPOWER. Fred has been post doc in Århus as well as holding positions at NTNU and the Norwegian Computing Center.
Aleksander Grochowicz is a PhD Candidate at the Department of Mathematics (UiO). Through the SPATUS project, he is part of the Risk and Stochastics group and the Energy Systems Modelling group at ITS. His research focuses on improving the understanding of uncertainties in energy systems (models) due to intermittencies of renewables.
Maximilian Roithner is a PhD Candidate at the Department of Technology Systems. He is part of the Energy Systems Modelling group and researches seasonal storage of electricity in hydrogen and hydropower on a macro system level.
Natalia Sirotko-Sibirskaya is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the project Machine Learning of Public Sentiments toward Wind Energy in Norway. She is part of the research groups Energy Systems Modelling and Risk and Stochastics.
