Profile fonts are used in branding communication and are essential to the distinctiveness of our profile. These fonts are not freely available, and require a licence. The profile fonts are mainly used by designers, advertising agencies and the university’s inhouse printing company, Reprosentral. The fonts are defined with correct styles in UiO’s templates.

Primary font – Swiss 721

Our primary font is Swiss 721. Swiss 721 is a sans serif font, with a large family of weights and proportions suitable for both print and screen.

It’s important to use the fonts to create identity and structure. In short, we use the weights as follows:

• Swiss 721 Regular is used in main headings, introductions and body text.
• Swiss 721 Bold is used in subheadings.
• Swiss 721 Italic is used to highlight sentences or words.

Secondary font

Our secondary font is Suisse BP Serif. Suisse BP is a serif font that can be used together with Swiss 721 to highlight quotes or utterances to create variation and contrast in the layout. In longer texts, such as books, magazines and scientific publications, Suisse BP is used in body text. Suisse BP should not be used in titles.

In short, we use the weights as follows:

• Suisse BP Serif Regular can be used in quotes, highlighted sections and body text.
• Swiss 721 Italic can be used to highlight sentences or words.

Usage fonts

• Arial and Times New Roman​

For everyday use, in PowerPoint presentations, reports and letters in Word, and in designing graphs and tables in Excel, Arial and Times New Roman are used. These fonts are available for free use on all machines and are ready for use in all of UiO's templates. 

In short, we use the fonts as follows:

• Arial is used in PowerPoint, on information screens and in headings and subheadings in letters and Word documents.
• Times New Roman is used as a text font in letters and documents.
