Keyless locks pilot project

Throughout 2023, the Estate Department will test a keyless locking system at the Department of Biosciences in Kristine Bonnevies hus. About 15 doors have been fitted with locks that open with a mobile app. This affects master students and a selection of employees.

Will it work on my phone?

We will be testing a keyless and battery-free locking system called iLOQ S50. This system uses Near Field Communcation (NFC) to unlock doors, the same technology used in mobile payment services such as Apple Pay. Unlike Bluetooth and WiFi, NFC only works over short distances, and you must hold your mobile phone close to a reader for it to work.

In order to use the keyless locks, you will need a smart phone compatible with NFC:

  • iPhones with iOS 13 or newer versions installed (iPhone 7 or newer models)
  • Android models with 6.0 Marshmallow

If your phone is non-compatible, the mobile app will not be available for download in App Store or Google Play. The app cannot be installed and used on jailbroken or rooted devices.

If you have a non-compatible phone, please contact the Security Operation Center to receive a key fob.

All digital keys will be deactivated at the end of the pilot project.

Installation and activation

Students and employees who require access will be contacted directly. You will receive a registration message through SMS or e-mail. Contact the Security Operation Center by e-mail if you need access and have not yet received a registration message. The app is free to download and use.

1. Install the iLOQ S50 mobile app directly from App Store (apps.apple.com) or Google Play (play.google.com)

2. Open the registration message and click the link. The app will open and the registration starts.

3. If this is the first time you are registering after installation, you will be asked to enter an activation code, which will be sent to you in a separate SMS or e-mail. Enter the single-use code press Activate.

4. If the single-use code is valid, your phone will now be activated. Press OK. The app is ready for use.

If you change mobile phones or delete the app during the pilot project, you must register again. Contact the Security Operation Center by e-mail if you require a new registration message.

Unlock a door

iPhone

1. Open the iLOQ S50 mobile app.

2. Press the unlock button on the screen. The message Klar til å skanne (ready to scan) will now show.

3. Place your phone’s NFC antenna against the lock on the door.

4. Keep your phone still until the app shows a successful opening screen. The door is now unlocked and you can open the door.

Android

1. Make sure your phone screen is not locked or switched off. Android phones do not need to open the iLOQ S50 app to unlock doors.

2. Place your phone’s NFC antenna against the lock on the door.

3. The screen turns grey when the app stars to communicate with the lock. Keep your phone still until the app shows a successful opening screen. The door is now unlocked and you can open the door.
