Get a tax card as an EU/EEA national

The fastest way to get a tax card depends on whether your appointment for EU registration at the Service Centre for Foreign Workers is within a month of your arrival or not.

Note: Due to limited resources, UiO cannot apply for a tax card on your behalf.

Appointment for EU registration within a month of arrival: apply for a tax card at this appointment

  • When finalising your EU registration at the Service Centre for Foreign Workers (sua.no), you will be directed to the tax office service desk in the same room. Bring with you the following documents:
    1. Your passport or National ID card containing a photo of you as well as indicating your citizenship and gender
    2. Your Notification of move to Norway (skatteetaten.no)
    3. A property purchase or rental contract valid for at least 6 months
If the rental contract is older than 3 months, you must also bring confirmation from the owner that the contract is still valid.
    4. Your employment contract with UiO
If the contract is older than 3 months, bring confirmation from your local personnel officer that the contract is still valid.
    5. A completed application for tax deduction card (RF1209) (pdf) (skatteetaten.no)
  • Approximately two weeks after you have submitted the application, you will receive a letter from the tax office. The letter contains a Norwegian ID number, either a permanent or temporary (D number). Submit this number to your local personnel officer for registration in UiO's payroll and personnel system. This will enable UiO to access your tax card electronically.

Appointment for EU registration more than a month after arrival: book a separate appointment to apply for a tax card

  • Book an appointment to apply for a tax card at the Service Center for Foreign
Workers in Oslo or a tax office that do ID checks in or around Oslo.
  • Bring the following documents to this appointment:

    1. Your passport or National ID card containing a photo of you as well as indicating your citizenship and gender

    2. Your employment contract with UiO. If the contract is older than 3 months, bring confirmation from your local personnel officer that the contract is still valid.
    3. A completed application for tax deduction card (RF1209) (pdf) (skatteetaten.no).
  • At the appointment, the tax office will carry out an ID check and you will receive your temporary ID number (D number). Submit this number to your local personnel officer for registration in UiO's payroll and personnel system. This will enable UiO to access your tax card electronically.
  • Normally, your tax deduction card will be available to UiO within 5 days.
  • Note that you must still follow up on your appointment with the police to finalise your EU registration.
