Blasting will take place twice a day in the Hospital Park on the west side of Domus Medica, between Domus Medica and Gaustad stream. This preparatory work is part of the construction of the New National hospital. It was scheduled to commence on 10th April, but has been postponed to 22nd April. This work will last for one month.

According to the time schedule, the blasting will occur at the following times every day from 22nd April to 22nd May:

  • Blast 1: 11.45-11.50
  • Blast 2: 15.45-15.50

Each blast lasts about 1 second and will be preceded by warning sirens.

Vibrations meters

Vibration meters have been installed in Domus Medica to measure vibrations and the maximum permitted limit for vibrations is 15 mm/s. The blasts have been adjusted down so that they remain well within the limits that have been set, in order to take account of other factors, such as the fact that the blasting will occur close to the main water pipe serving West Oslo. Noise meters have also been installed so that the maximum limit for average noise inside our building is set at 45 db every working day from 07.00 to 19.00.

The entrepreneur has been given a list of the dates on which students sit exams. There is on-going contact between the entrepreneur, UiO’s Estate Department and the Section of Internal Service at IMB.

Reactions to noise or vibrations

If you find the noise or vibrations unbearable, please contact Torgeir Kvernstuen, so that he can contact the construction manager on site.

The pedestrian and cycle track from Ring 3 is to be widened

The entrepreneur will construct an asphalted cycle track alongside the metal pedestrian gangway that runs between Domus Medica and the construction pit, since several people have complained that the metal walkway is too narrow to accommodate both pedestrians and cyclists.

What happens next in the construction project?

When the period of blasting is finished:

  • Pile hammering

The New National Hospital will be completed in 2031, extending the existing hospital by over 140,000 square metres.
