MED wishes to contribute to a sustainable future
The Faculty of Medicine aims to contribute actively to a sustainable future. We must think in new ways, including within the traditional disciplines, in order to be a driving force in the green shift and meet the societal changes that are required. We must therefore develop courses and programmes that provide knowledge about the links between climate, health and sustainability.
Honours Certificate for particularly motivated students
It is a pleasure to offer a new honours certificate at Master's level at the faculty: “Education for Sustainable Health”! The honours certificate has been developed by the SHE Centre for Sustainability in Health Education and is operated by the Institute of Health and Society.
An honours certificate is an additional education taken in parallel with a master's or programme of professional study. The study programme is aimed at particularly motivated students who want an extra challenge.
All second-cycle students at UiO can apply
The new honours certificate Education for Sustainable Health gives 20 credits, is in the English language and is open to all students at UiO. The deadline for applications is 1 November and teaching will start in January 2024. The offer has 30 study places.
Valuable expertise to be able to contribute to new solutions
The purpose of the honours certificate is to provide students with knowledge, expertise and skills that can help find solutions to sustainability issues.
Among other things, the teaching is linked to the importance of climate change for health, the connections between human health and other biological systems and different understandings of what is meant by “a sustainable health service”. Students will also gain expertise in teaching and guiding others in sustainable health and health care.
The honours programme at MED will be UiO's third
The University of Oslo also offers two other interdisciplinary honours certificates for second cycle students. Environmental Humanities and Environmental Sciences was launched in 2020 and this autumn also brings the Honours Certificate in Life Science Innovation. At Bachelor’s level, students at UiO can take the new Sustainability Certificate, a bachelor's supplement of 20 credits that is open to everyone.
It is a welcome development that students are given the opportunity to increase their expertise through short study programmes that are taken in addition to ordinary teaching. It will be interesting to see how many seize the opportunity.
