The first ten medical students at UiO Campus South have now completed their period of study at that campus, and following the end of the semester will return to Oslo to complete their final year of study.
Positive experiences from students at Campus South
The experiences of the students and staff at UiO Campus South have been fantastic. Students talk about an everyday study life where they are close to the clinic and patients, and where there is good cohesion within the student group and with the staff at the hospital.
As a student in a small group, they experience having greater personal responsibility for ensuring there is high-quality teaching. Therefore, students say that they have also changed study techniques by being better prepared for teaching, and that they can thereby spend time with the teachers on what requires more understanding and is clinically relevant. This also makes students feel well-prepared when running their own outpatient clinic in the hospital.
A strong effort has been put into the good results
Students have been very well received by the UiO staff at Campus South and by doctors and other healthcare professionals at the hospital. Here we need to make special mention of the Head of UiO Campus South, Halvor Øygarden, and coordinator, Julie Pihlmann, who are working hard to make our first decentralised campus a success for both students and staff. From the faculty’s point of view, we are also very pleased about the good and close cooperation we have developed with Sørlandet Hospital Trust.
Campus South will help ensure recruitment and academic development in Southern Norway
Two new student groups will travel to UiO Campus South in the autumn, and Module 4 will be held in Southern Norway for the first time. There has been a great deal of groundbreaking work in establishing a decentralized campus, and we are constantly working to improve and further develop this programme.
Our goal is for this to be an attractive programme for our medical students, and to contribute towards ensuring recruitment and academic development in Southern Norway. In any event, based on application figures from the Norwegian Universities and Colleges Admission Service (NUCAS), where there were the most applicants per study place for UiO Campus South, there are very many prospective students who are interested in this type of study programme.
