MED researchers in charge of three of the five new centres of excellence at the University of Oslo

• Arne Klungland to head up the Centre for Embryology and Healthy Development. (Link in Norwegian)
• Together, Karl-Johan Malmberg and Johanna Olweus will lead the PRIMA Precision Immunotherapy Alliance (link in Norwegian)
• Arnoldo Frigessi will head up the Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.. (link in Norwegian.)

The process leading up to two new centres of excellence

Research adviser Veslemøy Ramsfjell followed up on researchers and coordinated the process that led to two new centres of excellence. The Dean of Research, Jens Petter Berg, chaired the panel of experts providing advice and feedback to applicants throughout the process. What experiences could we gain in light of the application process for the fifth call for proposals for centres of excellence? Funding secured to continue work on EBRAINS data sharing

EBRAINS is entering its final year of EU funding. Jan Bjaalie has now secured the future of their data sharing work through three new funding allocations. Read the full article at the Department of Basic Medical Sciences website. (Link in Norwegian).

Anne Moen shares her experiences of
applying for EU funding 

In 2022, the Department of Health and Society has received EU funding for many new research projects. Through her funding allocations, Professor Anne Moen is one of the researchers making an important contribution. Here she will share some of her experiences. Read the full article.

• Forskning.no: Well-known researchers are favoured when research is assessed (in Norwegian). A major experiment has shown that the experts that are tasked with assessing the quality of new studies are less critical when they see that research has been conducted by a well-known researcher

NOK 12 million awarded to
research project on pandemic ethics

Rosemarie de La Cruz Bernabe, Professor at the Centre of Medical Ethics, has received NOK 11,999,000 for the Pandemic Ethics project. Read more about the project and catch Bernabe’s tips for researchers who are applying for funding. 

2022 Faculty Board Elections

The elections for the 01/01/2023-31/12/2026 period will take place this autumn and new representatives will be elected to the Faculty board from all employee electorates. Four new years for the management team at Klinmed

Even though there was no election, we can be sure that we will have a talented and experienced management team leading the department through the upcoming period. We have had an excellent collaboration with Dag Kvale and his team. “I would like to congratulate Dag Kvale, Shuo Wang Qiao and Torbjørn Omland on another four years,” says Dean Ivar P. Gladhaug. Studies

New master’s programme at the Department of Health and Society

New master’s programme in Public Health Sciences and Epidemiology (link in Norwegian) ready for the admission of new students. The programme includes two programme options. Public Health Work and Sustainable Health Services and Epidemiology. The first cohort of admissions will start in autumn 2023. Application deadline 20 April.

• Jens Pahnke recognised with pharmacology award (link in Norwegian). Pahnke has received the Oswald Schmiedeberg Award in Pharmacology for his research into and development of new pharmaceuticals to manage dementia and movement disorders. The Faculty management would like to extend its congratulations!

• Consortium meeting for OPTIM-PARK in Oslo.
  From 14-16 September, the international research consortium OPTIM-PARK brought together researchers and partners in Oslo to discuss the final phase of the research project. So far, the project has shown that people with Parkinson’s disease, relatives and healthcare professionals find that the services offered to people with Parkinson’s are very fragmented. The project group has developed an intervention which, in various ways, seeks to find a solution to some of these problems.

• Rosvold stands as Head of Department candidate at Helsam. Professor Elin Olaug Rosvold has been nominated as a candidate for the Head of Department post at the Department of Health and Society.

• The Iversen Seminar: Honouring Tor Iversen’s contributions to the field of health economics. The Department of Health Management and Health Economics recently celebrated Tor Iversen and his contributions to research and the research community on health economics.

• ERC Starting Grant: The European Research Council (ERC) will soon launch the 2023 Starting Grant call. Deadline 25 October 2023.

• ERC Synergy Grant: The ERC Synergy Grant (SyG) is for 2 - 4 PIs and their teams bringing together complementary skills in order to jointly address ambitious research problems in any field of research. Deadline: 8 November 2022.

• UiO:Life Sciences: Academic staff, postdoctoral fellows and PhD students in life sciences at the University of Oslo are welcome to apply for funding to strengthen collaborations with international research communities. Deadline: 1 December.

• UiO:Life Sciences: Academic employees and students at the University of Oslo are welcome to apply to University of Oslo:Life Sciences for funding to attend conferences and other open events. Successful applicants could receive up to NOK 50,000 and 50 per cent of the total amount. Closing date for applications: 1 December.

• ERC Consolidator Grant: The European Research Council (ERC) has announced the deadline for the 2023 Consolidator Grant. Deadline 2 February 2023.

• UiO:Life Sciences: Apply for admission to the SPARK Norway innovation programme  Do you have an idea relating to life sciences that could resolve challenges linked to human or animal health? Apply for admission to the University of Oslo:Life Sciences innovation programme, SPARK Norway, to further develop your idea into new technology, treatments or services. Deadline: 10 November

• UiO: Welcome to the Presentation of the 2022 Anders Jahre Awards for Medical Research at 18:00 in the University Auditorium. The Main Award for 2022 goes to our Professor at ClinMed, Harald A. Stenmark. The 2022 Young Researcher Awards go to lecturers Lars Wiuff Andersen from the University of Aarhus and Lykke Sylow from the University of Copenhagen.  Read more about the award.

  • UiO: The Jahre Lectures. The traditional Jahre lectures will take place and the audience will have the opportunity to listen to the award winners talk about their work between 10:10-13:40 that same day at the Professor’s Residence.

• 10 – 11 November National research conference on musculoskeletal health (MUSS conference), Hybrid conference (Gardermoen and Zoom)

• 11 November from 17:30-19:30, Literature Building. CanCell Young Scientists are arranging a seminar on why we should be conscious of mental health in academia and which strategies we could adopt to improve the research culture for all. This seminar is open to everyone.

• 23-24 November Free course for professors and managers in Trondheim, arranged by the School of Health Innovation:  Learn how you can increase innovation in your laboratory and build bridges between researchers and health innovators. • Deadline for submitting applications for assessment of PhD theses before the Christmas holidays: Applications for assessment (theses and committee proposals) must be submitted before 11 November 2022 in order for the committee to be appointed before the Christmas holidays. Applications must be complete. It will not be possible to submit a committee proposal before the deadline and then submit the thesis later (or vice versa). See overview of PhD deadlines.

• 1 December Welcome to UiO's annual conference on education Georg Sverdrup's house is filled with exciting lectures, conversations, poster sessions and idea workshops about how we can together create even better education at UiO. • 8 December: Oslo Peace Days 2022. Research into war, conflict and totalitarian states. Domus Biblioteca. How and why do we conduct research during war and ongoing conflict? Is it possible to conduct research in countries with totalitarian regimes? Field work from Doctors Without Borders, researchers from the Faculty of Medicine and an experienced foreign correspondent will take you on a journey into this challenging, unpredictable and important landscape.

Medisinbloggen: Older people need more protein than young people in Norwegian by Dina Moxness Konglevoll. Getting enough protein in your diet after the age of 40 leads to better health and makes us less frail as we get older.

IMB: Alzheimer’s Disease: Reduced signals in the forgotten cells of the brain by Cecilie Bakken Høstmark. Why does it become harder to concentrate when you have Alzheimer’s disease? The explanation is perhaps that the signals transmitted from glial cells to nerve cells are disrupted.
 

Helsam: Patients with severe mental disorders get better treatment with family involvement by Mathilde Coraline Aarvold Bakke. The study contributes new knowledge about the factors that inhibit and promote collaboration with relatives in the treatment of people with serious mental illness.
 

Aftenposten: Women’s health can be managed through other means than liposuction and chemical restoration in Norwegian by Johanne Sundby. The launch of yet another luxurious and undoubtedly expensive clinic for aesthetic medicine has sparked a rather important debate about women and health.

Apollon: Sustainability included in new dietary advice: He wants to give us the world’s best possible advice about what to eat in Norwegian by Trine Nickelsen. Five years, four hundred researchers and tens of thousands of articles. Enormous work is being undertaken to create new national dietary advice. Professor Rune Blomhoff is at the helm of it all.
