Jahre Awards Ceremony 2022

The Jahre Awards for 2022 will go to researchers and research fields in basal cancer research, research on metabolic changes in cancer and diabetes, and treatment of cardiac arrest. The main award very deservedly goes to our own Professor Harald Stenmark. The Anders Jahre's award for young researchers of NOK 400,000 is shared this year between Associate Professor Lykke Sylow from the Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports at the University of Copenhagen and Associate Professor Lars Wiuff Andersen from the Institute of Clinical Medicine at Aarhus University.

Faculty Board election 2022: The candidates are ready!

The Faculty Board election for the period 01.01.2023–31.12.2026 will be held this autumn. New representatives shall be elected to the Faculty Board in all constituencies. Student representatives with deputies and representatives with deputies from the temporarily employed academic staff shall be elected for one year: 1.1 to 31.12.2023. The students hold their own election. At the postponed deadline of 1 November, there was only one candidate for the election for the representative of temporary employees. Thus, no traditional elections will be held. She will be formally elected at the Faculty Board meeting on 15 December.

The election will open on 14 November 2022 at 08:00 and will end on 21 November 2022 at 12:00.

Aleksandra Weder Sawicka, who works as management support for the Faculty Management at MED, has been awarded the Humanist Award for 2022 for her outstanding efforts for war-torn "Ukrainian sisters". Kristiane Myckland Hansson and Morten Magelssen at the Centre for Medical Ethics receive a total of NOK 5.2 million in support from the Dam Foundation for new research projects. Read more (in Norwegian).

Millions of kroner for coeliac research

How much gluten is there in fermented foods? In the ImmunoSafe project, researchers will investigate this in order to develop better tests and facilitate safer daily food intake for coeliac patients. Read more (in Norwegian).

Victor Greiff appointed as Young CAS Fellow

For the second time, the Centre for Advanced Study at the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (CAS) has appointed two Young CAS Fellows. One of them is Victor Greiff, associate professor at the Department of Immunology and Transfusion Medicine at Klinmed. In his project, Greiff will explore how evolution has affected our immune system. Read the full article (in Norwegian).

  • ERC Synergy Grant: The ERC Synergy Grant (SyG) is for 2–4 PIs and their teams who combine complementary skills to jointly address ambitious research problems in any field of research. Deadline: 8 November 2022.

  • University of Oslo: Life Sciences: Academic staff, postdoctoral fellows and PhD students in life sciences at the University of Oslo are welcome to apply for funding to strengthen collaborations with international research communitiesClosing date for applications: 1 December.

  • University of Oslo: Life Sciences: Academic staff and students at the University of Oslo are welcome to apply to University of Oslo: Life Sciences for funding to attend conferences and other open events. Successful applicants could receive up to NOK 50,000 and 50 per cent of the total amount.  Closing date for applications: 1 December.

  • ERC Consolidator Grant: The European Research Council (ERC) has announced the deadline for the 2023 Consolidator Grant. Deadline 2 February 2023.
  • University of Oslo: Life SciencesApply for admission to the SPARK Norway innovation programme Do you have an idea relating to life sciences that could resolve challenges linked to human or animal health?   • 16 November Allison Portnoy, PhD from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health will give a talk on “Full value of vaccination: economic and distributional impacts of novel tuberculosis vaccines in low- and middle-income countries’’ as part of the national health economics seminar series. The seminar series is a hybrid seminar series established in 2020, bringing together people who are interested in health economics for presentations and discussions. The seminar will be streamed on Zoom. Read more.

  • 23–24 November course for professors and managers in Trondheim, arranged by the School of Health Innovation:  Learn how you can increase innovation in your laboratory and build bridges between researchers and health innovators.   • 22. november: You are invited to Global Health Day at Oslo University Hospital! Staff at the Oslo University Hospital (OUS) have been engaged in global health research and capacity development for decades. What is the status today? What is understood by the term "global health" in 2022? How does it affect OUS, the work and research?

  • Deadline for submitting applications for assessment of PhD theses before the Christmas holidays: Applications for assessment (theses and committee proposals) must be submitted before 11 November 2022 in order for the committee to be appointed before the Christmas holidays. Applications must be complete. It will not be possible to submit a committee proposal before the deadline and then submit the thesis later (or vice versa). See overview of PhD deadlines.

  • 1 December The Annual Educational Conference at the University of Oslo! The Georg Sverdrup Building will be packed with interesting lectures, meetings, lightning sessions and ideas workshops on how we, together, can improve education even further at the University of Oslo. Register now!  All employees and students at the University of Oslo are invited to attend.

In the Middle Ages, people of high status were both taller and had higher bone density than those from modest backgrounds.
