Hilde I. NebbEditorial: Something to be proud of

Hilde Irene Nebb, Vice-Dean of Innovation and Internationalisation at MED, talks about the fairytaile Scientia Fellows at the MED-faculty.

Since 2014, 160 emerging research talents have been working as part of the outstanding research communities at the University of Oslo via the Scientia Fellows programme in biomedical research. This has also contributed towards international growth at MED.

The final Scientia Fellows II recruitment round has an application deadline of 30 April and the project will conclude in 2024. An interim evaluation took place last autumn and we were encouraged to apply for a third round.

The Life Science Growth House has opened its doors!Åpningen av veksthuset med rektor og dekan

On 17 February, the Life Science Growth House – the new innovation unit for life sciences at the University of Oslo – was officially opened. The Growth House will help researchers and students with the innovation process. See pictures from the opening where we gathered Oslo’s innovation ecosystem for life sciences. The creation workshop LagLivLab invites medical students to create "lab-on-a-chip", and to do experiments with cells on these pieces. Center manager and professor of medicine Stefan Krauss at HTH and postdoctoral fellow Ludivine Delon hope more medical students will work on projects through LagLivLab. HelsamImmigrants in Norway with confidence in the corona handling in Norwegian by Thea Cecilie Engelsen. A study among five major immigrant groups in Norway shows that the respondents had high confidence in the authorities' corona handling and felt taken care of with sufficient information.

Women know less about the so-called overdiagnosis of breast cancer compared to other aspects of mammogram screening. Despite this, there are few indications that women drop out of mammogram screening programmes after receiving more information.

IMB– We need to focus on cholesterol levels even in childhood by Cecilie Bakken Høstmark. Today, the main focus is on lowering high cholesterol levels in adults in order to prevent atherosclerosis. But then it is already too late - we should start focusing on lowering cholesterol in childhood, suggests professor Kirsten Holven.

 

NCMM: Researcher profile: Karolina Spustova by Nuru Saadi. Dr. Karolina Spustova recently completed her PhD in the Gözen group at NCMM. Karolina’s project aimed to understand how life evolved on the early Earth from primitive cells to complex systems.
