Victor Greiff lands prestigious ERC Consolidator grant

In his project, Greiff will attempt to understand the rules of antibody-antigen binding,and how this knowledge can be used to develop effective therapeutic antibodies and vaccines.

New representative and two deputies on the Faculty Board

Congratulations to Markus Dines Knudsen who won the election! He is the new, permanent representative on the Faculty Board for temporarily employed academic staff, including temporarily appointed adjunct professors, throughout 2024. Lise Mørkved Helsingen and Lene Lunde have been elected as deputy representatives.

Research grant for serious heart disease

Kristina Haugaa has received a research grant together with the University of Minnesota to understand more about the heart disease called Lamin A/C cardiomyopathy.

The King’s Medal of Merit awarded to Johanne Sundby

Johanne Sundby has been awarded the King’s Medal of Merit for her many years of diverse activities within the field of female health in Norway and abroad.

Briefings

• Holidays, flexitime and working hours during the Christmas period. December is almost upon us and it is time to plan for Christmas. Have you utilised the statutory holiday and plus hours you are entitled to, and are you aware of the days off and working hours during the Christmas period? Did you know that UiO gives you a day off during the Christmas period as a present?

• 3 December: Turning on the Christmas tree lights at University Square (info from UiO in Norwegian). On the first Sunday in Advent, the Christmas tree will be lit at University Square for over the hundredth time! 

• Time to send Christmas cards? Every year, UiO creates an electronic Christmas card (.pdf) that employees can send to friends and work partners. The card can also be printed by the Graphic Center if an order is placed. Read more in Norwegian: Elektronisk julekort

• Medical photographic history in the National Archives of Norway.. The analogue film archive of Klinmed’s photo and video service has been transferred to the National Archives of Norway. The collection consists of photographs from 1937 up to the early 2000s, and gives an insight into Norway’s medical history.

• Eksterne kulturtilbud for ansatte: External cultural activities for employees: Discounts on theatre performances and Christmas concerts available to UiO employees.

• Excavation work at Domus Medica, se see information from the Norwegian Hospital Construction Agency and phase plans..

Management meetings

Management Forum: Overview of meeting dates. The next meeting is Tuesday, 23 January. Agenda items and documents may be submitted until 12:00 on the last Thursday before the meeting. Here are the minutes from the previous meeting.

  • The Centre for Research-based Innovation’s (SFI V) call for applications will be released soon! Potential applicants from MED should make their interest known at their department/institute as soon as possible. The Research Council of Norway’s deadline is expected to be in April/May 2024. • 6 December UiO invites you to attend a course on Project management in academia. Location: The Helga Engs building Time: 09:00-12:00. – The aim of this course is to give you the knowledge to better plan your research project, to ensure effective implementation and to minimise risks throughout.
• University Square, 14 December organised by the Centre for Medical Ethics: Participants from the Family Involvement During Severe Mental Health Problems project will summarise five years of research and implementation work in mental health care.
• 11 January: Final seminar for the research project Rethinking Cancer Survivorship. Organised by Rethinking Cancer Survivorship (CANCUL) and the Society, Health and Power (SHEP) research group. 
• 13 and 14 February: Norway Life Science 2024: Unlocking the Potential of Health Data. Registration opens in December.

Medisinbloggen: Health work under bombardment in Norwegian by Erik Fosse. Israel’s war against Hamas is destroying all the hospitals in Gaza. I have worked in and with the hospitals there for 30 years, and have made many good friends and colleagues. They are now trying to help the injured, but find themselves in an impossible and dangerous situation.

Klinmed: More serious skin cancer in organ transplant patients (link in Norwegian) “We have seen that organ transplant recipients have more tumors and spread of cancer than others with the same type of skin cancer. These patients need to thoroughly protect themselves from the sun and check their skin regularly,” says Petter Gjersvik.

Medisinbloggen: Resistance without borders – when antibiotics do not work in Norwegian by Kristian Tonby, Erik Gerhardsen Formanek and Else Liv Quist-Paulsen. The war in Ukraine is brutal. Hospitals in Norway are receiving patients evacuated from Ukraine. We were not prepared for the high incidence of infections involving multidrug-resistant bacteria.
