The Management Column

New teaching award for the medicine programme of study

NOKUT (National Agency for Quality in Education) has sent out a survey about your experiences with and views on medical education. Feedback from those who teach medical students is important information for the expert committee that is evaluating all medical education in Norway. 

The programme manager and study manager Magnus Løberg encourage everyone who has received the survey to respond.

Process Improvement for the PhD Programme

On behalf of the faculty, Deloitte will look into administration and processes around the PhD programme. The main objective is to find measures for improvement, as well as document processes and workflows so that the UiO can continue its improvement work. The work involves a great deal of employee involvement to ensure that their input becomes part of the solutions. If you have any questions, please contact Thea Ramm or Grete Dyb. Two new search options for medical study at the UiO

From the autumn of 2024, those who apply for medical study at the University of Oslo (UiO) can apply for admission to UiO Campus South. Read more on the study pages in Norwegian. 

Briefings

• UiO: Possible to donate IT equipment to Ukrainian schoolchildren. Do you have a work PC or other IT equipment that you intend to replace, but is still usable? Now it can be donated to primary schools in Ukraine. An initiative at the Faculty of Medicine has become a scheme that the entire UiO can use. Read about the entire case on the Employee Website. 

• UiO: The UiO Winter Activities Day, Thursday February 15th. The winter activities day is an annual event, organized by UiOBIL, and offered to all employees of UiO. Participation on the day must be registered and approved by the nearest supervisor. 

• UiO: The application deadline for admission to the University of Oslo’s daycare facilities (Kindergarten) for the 2022/2023 academic year, starting in August, is 1 March. If you meet the application criteria, please submit your application using the online form Read more and apply here. 

• UiO: Nominate your candidate for the UiO HSSE Award. Every year, the HSE Award is presented to an individual or group at the University of Oslo that have made a significant contribution to the working environment at their unit or at the University of Oslo as a whole. • UiO: In February, the entire faculty will complete the higher education sector’s working environment and working climate survey (ARK). The survey will be sent out to everyone on Monday 12 February. Read more about the working environment survey ARK. 

• Uniforum: The UiO has added two women as top executives (link in Norwegian). Today, Elisabeth Pedersen Lange was offered the position of new HR Director at the University of Oslo. She is currently employed as assistant faculty director at the Faculty of Medicine at the UiO. Eva Helene Mjelde has been offered the position of faculty director at the MN faculty.

• Klinmed: The 11 new portfolio boards in the NFR started on 1 January. Professor Ole A. Andreassen leads the new portfolio board for health. Read more on the institute's website in Norwegian.

• Khrono/ Helsam: Was about to leave academia. Ingvild Bergom Lunde is the newly elected leader of the Association of Doctoral Organizations in Norway (SiN). The response she received after she wrote about the challenges a fellow may face gave new inspiration to continue on an academic path. Read the entire case.

• UiO: External cultural activities for employees: Discounts on theatre performances and concerts are available to UiO employees. Enjoy discounted prices and take the youngest of the family to see HC Andersen’s The Nightingale at the National Theatre. The last performance will be in March.

• UiO: Keep up to date with the study into the possibility of a shared organisational structure for the Faculty of Dentistry and the Faculty of Medicine (page in Norwegian). Please contact the work group if you have any input.

• IMB: Excavation work at Domus Medica, keep updated on information from the Norwegian Hospital Construction Agency and phase plans.

• Upcoming public defences

• The postdoctoral programme’s course overview has been updated. The first courses start in March, but you can apply now. We recommend that all postdoctoral fellows at MED complete these courses that can help and support future careers
• 12 February: Input meeting in English: New language policy at UiO. Join us and contribute to UiO's new language policy! At this first of two breakfast meetings – one in Norwegian, one in English – we will share experiences and gather input on language use and language policy at UiO.
• 12 February: Welcome to all new hires at MED (in Norwegian). All new hires receive a personal invitation from Dean Hanne Flinstad Harbo to the first welcome meeting for new hires after they have started. Have you received an invitation? Come to the meeting! Faculty management wants to get to know you.
• 12 February: Rape is a serious form of crime, which can have major consequences for the person affected. Thus, rape becomes a health problem that affects many people. The roundtable discussion is led by Kari Solbrække. Read more and sign up for the event "Rape is a health problem" here (in Norwegian). 
• 13 and 14 February: Norway Life Science Conference 2024: Unlocking the Potential of Health Data. Registration is open.

• 15 February: Join in on the workshop on Research Integrity in Open Science for Europe, organized by the European Parliament's STOA Panel for the Future of Science and Technology. • 15 February: The UiO Winter Activities Day. The winter activities day is an annual event, organized by UiOBIL, and offered to all employees of UiO. Participation on the day must be registered and approved by the nearest supervisor
• On 15 February, the faculty will be contributing to this year’s event ‘Boys and Life Sciences’. An inspirational day for boys. Students from biology, psychology, pharmacy, clinical nutrition and medicine will be talking about their subjects.
• 27 February, 18:00 - 19:30 The brain and gender of Domus Bibliotheca (in Norwegian) – Our brains are perhaps similar, yet different due to certain factors. Is it hormones?
• 27 February: Welcome breakfast for new international researchers. The University of Oslo takes pleasure in inviting all international employees, researchers and Ph.D. candidates who have joined our institution recently to an orientation meeting and common breakfast. Read more and register here.
• 29 February. Webinar for ansatte som jobber innen forskerstøtte: Mottak av internasjonale forskere. Møte med ISMO (International Staff Mobility Office). IMB: Some antibiotics result in more multi-resistant and pathogenic E.coli. There is a clear correlation between the use of a particular type of antibiotic and the increased prevalence of a multi-resistant E. coli clone. This study illustrates the need for national surveillance systems to monitor antibiotic resistance.

More awareness about the issue, stigma reduction and preventive measures are needed, according to a new Lancet Healthy Longevity study.

Centromeres are essential for healthy cell division. Researchers now reveal the mechanism that allow them to form. Researchers from the Nikolina Sekulic research group are now revealing the mechanism by which they can be formed.
