Another year with good number of applicants to our study programmes

After several years of high growth in the number of applicants per study place in the period 2012 to 2017, the number of applicants per study place has stabilized at a high level in the last two years. We are pleased with this, especially because we have introduced stricter admission requirements and have increased the number of study places in the recent years.

The Honours Programme

Firstly, I would like to highlight the interest in the Honours Programme. With 6.4 (humanities) and 7.3 (science and technology) first-choice candidates, we, together with the Faculty of Humanities, can welcome very good candidates for this new programme.

The Honours Programme combines discipline knowledge and interdisciplinarity with an additional subject across the humanities and natural sciences. Artificial intelligence will be the theme for the additional subject for the students starting this autumn.

One-year Programme in Informatics

Our new one-year programme in informatics has also become a very popular study programme with 7.6 first-choice candidates per study place. These are completely new study places in computer science.

In addition to the one-year programme, the number of applications for all computer science programmes are good. Informatics; Digital Economy and Management (DigØk), is among these programmes with several applicants per study place.

R2 Requirements in Biosciences

We have been excited to find out how the R2 requirements, ie. courses in advanced mathematics in high school, in biosciences would turn out. We do not have the answer yet, but there is reason to be somewhat optimistic since the number of applications are better than expected.

More and more people wants to take a master’s thesis at UiO

The faculty has more than three first-choice applicants per study place for our master’s programmes. This is an increase from last year, which was an all-time high then. This means we have a new all-time high this year! There are many indications that young students have noticed the high quality of our master’s programmes across the breadth of mathematics, science and technology.

Targeted profiling

In conclusion, I want to mention that good and targeted profiling works. This year we have experimented with this, and have strong indications that the great interest in the Honours Programme and the One-Year Programme in Informatics is due to this profiling. It is therefore natural to apply these experiences to the study programmes with fewer first-choice applicants per study place up to the application deadline next year.

I want to thank students who have completed school visits as UiO ambassadors and others who have contributed to the profiling work of our studies.
