In 2017, something completely new happened at the University of Oslo, the first convergence environments were created under the auspices of UiO:Life Science. The six interdisciplinary research groups that were selected after a thorough application process were to solve major societal challenges in health and the environment. Wednesday 30 March was the closing event and time to share experience and results.

Our researchers are doing very well in the competition for funding for new research projects from both the Research Council of Norway and the European Research Council (ERC). In addition, Earth and environmental science at UiO rank 3rd in Europe outside UK.

UiO:Life Science will fund 40 educational summer research projects for students between April and September 2022. Students currently enrolled in a bachelor, master or relevant professional degree program at the University of Oslo are eligible to apply. The registration will open Thursday 13 January at 8 am.

The Centre for Digital Life Norway encourages open science and FAIR data management. For the first time, they are highlighting and rewarding outstanding examples of life science researchers in Norway who have managed their data according to the FAIR principles.

At the same time as UiO is working to design a comprehensive climate and environmental strategy for the entire university, we at the MN Faculty have already invited our researchers to apply for KD-positions tied to research projects with sustainable development relevance.

Forty-two students have gained work experience from a research project with a scholarship from UiO:Life Science this summer. The end of this year's summer projects was celebrated with presentations, poster exhibition and prize ceremony on 19 October.

The latest report from the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) confirms the importance of sustainability, which is a major focus point at the University of Oslo. UiO has already hired a vice-rector for climate, environment and cross-disciplinarity. This is a very clear signal from our Rectorate, and we, the Deans of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, will contribute and ensure that the Faculty becomes an important contributor. In our election platform, we emphasized sustainability as the basis for everything we do. A sustainability initiative will be a central part of our work.

Recently the new biotech company Tribune Therapeutics was established based on research conducted by Ole Jørgen Kaasbøll and Håvard Attramadal. Ole Jørgen Kaasbøll was admitted to UiO:Life Science’ innovation programme SPARK Norway in 2019 and will now assume the role of Chief Scientific Officer in the new company where Georg Vo Beiske, HealthCap has been appointed Chief Executive Officer. Tribune Therapeutics aims to develop a treatment for fibrosis.

It has been a strange situation to start as new Deans without the opportunity to meet colleagues at the Departments and in the Faculty Administration. However, we are established as a new team, with full calendars and tasks waiting in line. There is no shortage of projects and a desire to work at UiO, and that's good! At the same time, we feel the limitations of just meeting digitally. There are so many of you we are looking forward to meeting for valuable discussions and input!

Society is changing faster than ever, and it is challenging to predict what kind of professions that will exist in ten years. Claims like this are common in the media. Even though one can discuss the accuracy of these claims, it is still quite clear we live in a changing world. Natural sciences and technology are often the catalyst of many of these changes. At the same time, our disciplines contribute with knowledge to guide the changes in a sustainable and responsible direction.

UiO:Life Science does not offer its own courses or study programs in life sciences, but wants to contribute to providing the students with the best possible educational programs. Departments and faculties can now apply for support to develop interdisciplinary bachelor courses in life sciences. The application deadline is 1 April.
