From data to insight

On Thursday 10 January 2019 we launch the innovation conference From Data to Insight. There we will highlight some of Norway’s most innovative and enabling technology environments that allow us to exploit the vast amount of data we face for the benefit of society.

Much of the new insight we create depends on our ability to understand and use digitalization and computational science. The use of advanced calculations combined with other knowledge in medicine and health, environment and energy, and bank and finance, to name a few, are becoming increasingly important.

What you put in the term digitalization may vary depending on who you are talking to. There are many words and concepts flying around - like Big Data, Data Science and Advanced Analytics. Concepts like Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence are used interchangeably, and the term digitalization is often used as a collective term for all these different concepts. However, all of these concepts are the expression of different approaches and methods of how we handle and exploit data, and digitalization – to use that expression – is pervasive in today’s society and the society of tomorrow in all sectors and in all parts of business.

The use of digital resources takes a central part in our research and education, and a large part of our collaboration with public sector entities and businesses is about the development and use of digital resources.

There is an increasing interest in how we can exploit the enormous production of data we experience in today's ICT driven society. While the amount of data increases exponentially, access to data has not increased at the same rate. This means that more and more companies and organizations are sitting on large amounts of data with untapped potential and with a great deal of lost business opportunities. And, even worse; maybe even more people risk using these data in a way that misrepresent reality! That is why it is important to acknowledge that obtaining, organizing and analyzing vast amounts of data requires deep insight into subjects such as mathematics, statistics and informatics. We at UiO are good at this, and we want to demonstrate that at the innovation conference in 2019.

UiO has a proud history when it comes to digitalization. The award-winning duo Ole-Johan Dahl and Kristen Nygaard (only in Norwegian), both professors of informatics, where both visionary and had ideas far ahead of their time. Our dean Morten Dæhlen, who is also a professor of informatics, are opening the innovation conference by giving us a historical backdrop to UiOs proud history while also looking ahead.

The government’s work with Digital21 proposes to strengthen, target and integrate the key tasks that business, academia and government need to solve together. Morten Dalsmo from SINTEF is head of the Digital21 Board. At the innovation conference, he will tell us more about their work.

You will also meet Marianne Fyhn, amongst others. She is on the path of understanding the mechanisms behind brain disease. Berit Svendsen, who will lead VIPPS to new heights internationally, are also coming, and so are Kyrre Glette, who will tell us more about the robots that are coming!

We invite businesses, decision makers and academia to a dialogue at our annual innovation conference, which last year drew a full house with over 550 participants (only in Norwegian).

Welcome to the innovation conference From Data to Insight 10 January 2019!
