Take a screenshot / snip on your computer or phone

You may need to take a picture of contents on your screen, for example to document a problem, or to use in a user guide.

Windows

UiO recommends using Snipping Tool to take screenshots on Windows devices. Snipping Tool is built into Windows.

  1. Launch Snipping Tool. You can find it by clicking on the Start button and scrolling to the folder Windows Accessories, or by searching for the tool by name in the search field next to the start button.
  2. Click on Mode and select the desired mode. We recommend the following:
    1. Rectangular Snip to snip an area of your screen.
    2. Window Snip to snip an entire program/window.
    3. Full-screen Snip to take a screenshot of your entire screen.
  3. To take a screenshot/snip, click on New, or by clicking Ctrl + N on your keyboard.
    1. For Rectangular Snip you select the desired area by clicking and dragging your mouse cursor from corner to corner.
    2. For Window Snip you click on the window you want a screenshot of.
    3. For Full-screen Snip a screenshot will be taken as soon as you click on New.
  4. Once the picture is taken a preview of the image will be shown in the program. If the picture is incorrect you may follow 3. to take a new image. Note, doing so will discard the previous picture.
A picture of Snipping tool once a picture has been taken.
  5. You may copy the picture by clicking Edit and Copy, or by clicking Ctrl + C. This allows you to quickly send the photo in an email or chat by right clicking and selecting Paste, or by clicking Ctrl + V on your keyboard.
  6. If you want to save the photo you may do so by clicking File and Save as... or by clicking Ctrl + S on your keyboard. From here you select where the photo is saved and the name of the picture.
