Master's admissions FAQ

We receive numerous emails after the application results have been published. We ask you to read our admission FAQ below before you send us an email.

My Søknadsweb status is 'Not qualified'. What does that mean?

'Not qualified' means that you don't fulfil one or more of our admission requirements, or that you did not upload sufficient documents within the given deadline. Please see the programme web pages for information about the admission requirements.

My Søknadsweb status is 'Admission not granted'. What does that mean?

'Admission not granted' means that you unfortunately were not ranked among the admitted applicants. The number of available places in our master’s programmes is limited and admission is highly competitive.

Waiting lists

Waiting lists are only available in the July admission round for residing applicants. There are no waiting lists for the April admission round for EU-applicants.

If there are more qualified applicants to a programme than available places, qualified applicants that did not receive an offer of admission, will be offered a place on the waiting list. You must accept this offer in Søknadsweb or you will not be added to the waiting list.

You can accept an offer of admission to a programme that was ranked lower in your priorities, and still accept an offer to be put on a waiting list for a programme ranked higher. Should you receive an offer of admission to a higher priority programme, the offer for the lower priority programme will be withdrawn.

If there are available places in a programme after the offer response deadline, admission offers will be sent to applicants on the waiting list.  Programmes with available places will issue additional offers of admission on 15 July and 7 August. You will be notified by email in case you receive one of these offers.

Please note that we will only notify those on the waiting list who are granted offers of admission. Waiting list numbers will be updated in Søknadsweb after the additional admission round(s).

We cannot predict if additional offers of admission will be issued. If a study place is available for you, you will be notified by email.

Information about required points and number of applicants

You will find information about this year's admission required points (poenggrenser) on the Required points for master's admission web page (the results from the 2024 admission will be available from Friday 5 July). In addition, you will see how many applicants were granted admission, and how many applications the different master's programmes have received this year. For information about which courses form the basis for the ranking of applicants, please see "Academic background" on the relevant programme web pages.

Please note that some programmes have additional ranking, based on motivation letters, CV, work experience, etc. If your master's programme has additional ranking criteria, you will find relevant information under the heading "Ranking of applicants" on the programme web pages.

I wish to ask for an explanation

You may ask for an explanation concerning the grounds for the result of your application within three weeks of having received your application results.

If you have reason to believe your application was wrongfully evaluated, you have the right to file a complaint. We recommend that you ask for an explanation before you file a complaint. The deadline for filing a complaint is three weeks after you received the explanation for your application results. Please see our web page on admission complaints regulations for more information.

Please contact us at masteropptak@admin.uio.no if you wish to ask for an explanation.

When do I get information about the start of studies?

Most master's programmes will send relevant information about the start of studies by email. You will also find more information on the relevant programme web pages, and on UiO's web page on start of studies.

I have accepted my offer of admission. Why am I unable to register for courses?

You will be able to register for courses, etc. as soon as you have been given the right to study at your study programme in our systems.

Applicants who have received regular offers of admission will be able to register for courses from 2 August.

Applicants who have received conditional offers of admission will be able to register for courses from 13 August, but not before the conditions of their offer have been met.

If you have been notified that you must pay the tuition fee for new students holding citizenships from outside the EU/EEA countries and Switzerland, you will not be able to register for courses until we have received your payment, or until you have applied for and have been granted an exemption.

Does UiO have available places?

If you did not apply for admission within the application deadline, it is not possible to apply for a place on our master's programmes now.

Does UiO offer single courses?

Some courses may be available for students who are not admitted to a programme. You will find relevant information on the web page on single courses.

Tuition fee for students from outside the EU/EEA countries and Switzerland

New students from outside the EU/EEA countries and Switzerland must pay tuition fees, unless they qualify for an exemption. Students who have to pay tuition fees will be contacted. More information about tuition fees and exemptions can be found on our Tuition fee web page.
