East Asia is one of the world’s most dynamic, vibrant regions, which includes several different nations and cultures, connected together by countless historical, cultural and economical ties. The Master’s Degree in East Asian Studies is offered to students who have already taken one of the region’s languages (Chinese, Japanese, or Korean) as a part of their Bachelor programs and also have acquired broad previous knowledge on the region during their undergraduate years. The The Master’s Degree in East Asian Studies give a deeper insight into the region’s politics, society and cultures in a comparative perspective, emphasizing the relevance of the common regional legacy in the process of modernization, the forms the discourses of modernity took in the East Asian countries, and socio-political aspects of the modernization, particularly with reference to the labour-capital relations.

The study (in English translation) of the main canonical works of the East Asian tradition as well as the “modernity canons” of the region produced in the late 19th – early 20th C., together with critical reading of the research literature on the socio-political and ideological aspects of the modernization in the East Asian countries will be central elements of the course. Academic training will also be provided through the writing of a dissertation.
