Why choose this programme option?

East Asian Linguistics is one of a very few master’s programmes in Europe which integrates the study of East Asian languages and linguistics.

At the core of the programme you will find a specialization in an East Asian language, and work on:

  • lingustics and language in East Asia
  • differences and similarities in structure and use between the East Asian languages
  • development of writing and script in East Asia
  • relationships and influence between the East Asian languages

The programme involves a research based thesis on any topic relating to language and writing in East Asia. The thesis can focus on some aspect of the language of specialization, or it can compare or contrast linguistic phenomena across East Asia.

Chinese or Japanese may be the language of specialization. Korean is not taught at the University of Oslo. However, the university has highly qualified expertise within this language, so students of Korean may be accepted provided they are able to take their courses in the language of specialization at other institutions.

The programme is open for students with a good first degree in Chinese or Japanese (or both). Students who have a strong knowledge of Chinese or Japanese (for example as a first language) in combination with a specialization in language or philology, are also welcome to apply. See this webpage for admission requirements.

The programme is taught by experts in the fields of Chinese and Japanese language and linguistics.
