Course description
- The course description must be proofread by the course convenor for courses that will be offered next semester.
- Any changes should be reported to the program secretary for consideration by the programme council (please notice, deadlines could be as early as January for the following fall semester, and August for the following spring semester)
- Inform the head of studies and student adviser as early as possible if you are planning major changes to the course
- Accepted changes to the course description will be updated by the study adviser in the UiO system, Emneplanlegging på Nett (EpN).
Teaching planning and timetable
All teaching at UiO is scheduled in a common timetable planning tool (TP) within a deadline set by the study advisor, and the system assigns rooms and times to all courses.
- You will receive a draft teaching schedule from the study advisor. This may be based on last year's schedule, or you may need to fill out a request for weeks.
- Please respond to the study advisor about which teaching weeks you prefer.
- There is little flexibility for specific teaching times.
- Study advisors enter teaching in the TP and report back assigned rooms and times.
- Timetables with lecturers and syllabus are updated by subject coordinators within a given deadline. See guidelines.
- After the semester schedule is published to students (late November/late May), we must avoid changing assigned teaching times as students enroll in teaching.
Canvas
Canvas is UiO's learning platform and the digital teaching space for the course.

Planning before teaching starts
- Look at the course's setup of the Canvas room. Should the seminars have their own rooms managed by seminar leaders? If there are changes, or if you are unsure, speak to the student advisor about this in connection with the timetable planning of the course.
- The Canvas room is prepared. How the room is designed and used is up to the individual course convenor. A strong recommendation is as follows:
- Update the front page with relevant information about the course. All Canvas rooms at ISS have a standard front page template with suggestions for information that may be useful.
- Create modules that clarify the teaching plan for the student.
- Notify the student advisor about who should have access to the Canvas room if multiple teachers are associated with the course.
Universal design
All instructional materials you upload to websites, Canvas, and other digital services at UiO should be universally designed in accordance with the regulations for universal design of ICT (Lovdata). Universal design is the design of products, environments, and digital content in a way that they can be used by all people to the greatest extent possible, without the need for individual adaptation.
What does universal design mean for you as an instructor?
Seminar leaders
- The course convener has the academic responsibility for the seminars and for setting up a plan for seminar teaching.
- Recruitment of seminar leaders
- The course convenor can find or suggest suitable seminar leaders.
- For SGO, HGO, and UTV, the head of teaching and student advisor handle the recruitment.
- Ensure training of seminar leaders on the course matter and learning goals.
- NB: If seminars have mandatory requirements, it is essential that the course responsible and seminar leaders have good communication with the study counselor of the course about following up with students who need accommodations/do not pass the requirements
- Lists of passed/failed mandatory activity must be submitted to the student advisor immediately after the activity is completed. Mandatory attendance is registered in the fagpersonweb system. Study adivisors delete exam registrations for students who did not pass.

External resources in teaching
If a course cenvenor at ISS wishes to use employees from other units at UiO to give lectures on their own course, this must be managed as a release of resources to ISS. Therefore, the course convenor must be in dialogue with the student advisor to ensure that the release or potential contract for the teaching is in order before the teaching begins
