Takk for et godt vårsemester!
Det har vært et begivenhetsrikt halvår på fakultetet, med høy aktivitet ved instituttene. Vi forbereder innflytting i nytt bygg, står på med søknader og komitearbeid – samtidig som undervisning, veiledning, forskning og forvaltning går sin gang som normalt. Takk til dere alle! Her er noen smakebiter fra vårens aktiviteter:
IBV inn i Livsvitenskapsbygget
Det var stor glede ved fakultetet da rektoratet åpnet opp for Institutt for biovitenskap (IBV) i Livsvitenskapsbygget. Bygget reiser seg svært raskt, og innflytting 2026 står fast. Mange har jobbet hardt dette semesteret for å få på plass arealkabalen mellom Kjemisk institutt, Farmasøytisk institutt, IBV og aktivitetene som skal flytte inn fra Det medisinske og Det odontologiske fakultet. I tillegg har vi jobbet hardt med brukerutstyrsprosessene, der det investeres flere hundre millioner kroner i kjernefasiliteter og virksomhetskritisk utstyr for forskning og undervisning i nybygget. Rektor er særlig opptatt av at investeringene gir gevinster ved å oppfylle samfunns- og effektmål som er satt, og at det etableres tverrfaglig samarbeid som munner ut i konvergens ved UiO. For å stimulere dette har rektor selv ledet arbeidet med etablering av tematiske satsingsområder innen livsvitenskap, og mekanismer for samarbeid på tvers av fagmiljøer i og utenfor bygget. Dette grunnleggende arbeidet er vi i ferd med å ferdigstille, og vi avventer nå de viktige beslutningene som skal tas av universitetsstyret etter sommerferien.
Forskning
Ett av høydepunktene ved fakultetet var i mai da vi signerte en samarbeidsavtale med Niels Bohr Institutet ved Københavns Universitet om kvanteteknologi, i påsyn av det danske kongeparet og vår egen kronprins Haakon. Danskene er verdensledende på kvanteteknologi, så dette samarbeidet er svært positivt for oss. Målet er at samarbeidet skal bidra til å operasjonalisere forskningen vår og ruste oss til å ta en tydelig rolle på kvanteteknologifeltet. Kvanteteknologi blir en viktig del av fakultetets arbeid fremover, der vi ønsker å posisjonere oss tydelig som en sterk enhet for fremtidsrettede teknologier ved å løfte frem våre sterke teknologimiljøer i en samlet satsing.
Utadrettet virksomhet
I april hadde vi to viktige besøk ved fakultetet: KDs avdeling for eierskap i høyere utdanning og forskning, seksjon for finansiering, kom for å få vite mer om vår forskningsaktivitet, undervisning og andre prosjekter. Det ble et godt møte, der vi fikk vist frem noen av våre flotte forskere innen kvanteteknologi, elektronikk og maskinlæring. Og utdannings- og forskningskomiteen til Arbeiderpartiet fikk høre om det store potensialet som ligger i grunnforskningen, med presentasjoner av fakultetets nye forskningssenter for nukleærteknologi, innføring i kvantefysikk og de store mulighetene som ligger i kvanteteknologi, og et avsluttende besøk på bølgelaboratoriet ved Matematisk institutt.
Utdanning
Årets søkertall viste en gledelig økning i søkning til masterprogrammene våre, og det ser nå ut til at vi vil fylle våre masterplasser – for første gang på flere år! Dette er svært gledelig og viktig, både fordi samfunnet sårt trenger våre kandidater innen realfag og teknologi, men også fordi UH-sektorens basisfinansiering fra KD nå skal baseres på utdannings- og veiledningsoppdraget vårt.
De nye bachelorprogrammene ved Matematisk institutt slo også godt an blant søkerne. Gratulerer, dette lover godt! Og i mai fikk UiO, ved Det utdanningsvitenskapelige fakultet, dispensasjon fra Kunnskapsdepartementet til å tilby en ny, profesjonsrettet masterutdanning med PPU allerede fra kommende høst. Det blir en ny mulighet for å utdanne realfagslektorer, og tilbudet ble raskt svært populær og har fått mange søkere – også til matematikk og naturfagdidaktikk.
Priser og tildelinger
Også dette semesteret har flere av MNs dyktige folk høstet priser og fått tildelinger – her er noen av dem:
- Vår studiedekan, Knut Mørken, fikk NOKUTs ærespris for å ha gjort en særlig innsats for å sikre og utvikle kvaliteten i norsk høyere utdanning. Gratulerer!
- Tre av UiOs fem priser går i år til MN: Forskningsprisen til Ingunn Kathrine Wehus og Hans Kristian Kamfjord Eriksen på Institutt for teoretisk astrofysikk, Utdanningsprisen til Omid Mirmotahari på Institutt for informatikk og innovasjonsprisen til Svein-Erik Hamran på Institutt for teknologisystemer. Prisene deles ut på UiOs årsfest i Aulaen 2. september. Da mottar også Johannes Røsok Eskilt ved Institutt for teoretisk astrofysikk, H.M. Kongens gullmedalje til fremragende, yngre forskere. Gratulerer!
- Tre av 10 Marie Curie-prosjekter til UiO ble tidligere i år tildelt forskere ved MN. Vi gratulerer Nils Christian Stenseth, Mats Carlsson og Eivind Undheim! I etterkant har også Nikolas Kuhn ved Matematisk institutt fått innvilget et MSCA Global fellowship, og UiO ytterligere ett. Det betyr at MN fikk 4 av 12 prosjekter ved UiO. Gratulerer!
- Trond Helge Torsvik mottok den mest prestisjefylte prisen innen geofag - Wollaston Medal fra Geological Society of London. Han er i godt selskap! Tidligere prisvinnere inkluderer Charles Darwin og UiOs første rektor, Waldemar Christopher Brøgger. Gratulerer!
- Hans Kristian Eriksen er tildelt ERC Advanced Grant innen kosmologi. Dette er hans tredje ERC-tildeling - en eksepsjonell prestasjon! Gratulerer!
- Kent Andre Mardal har mottatt ERC Advanced Grant innen beregningsvitenskap. Gratulerer!
- Henrik Hovde Sønsteby har fått pris fra industrien ved dataselskapet Intel for sin grunnforskning på komplekse oksider. Gratulerer!
- Lena Tallaksen er tildelt International Hydrology Prize 2024, som den første norske mottaker av prisen. Gratulerer!
- UiO fikk fem FRIPRO-tildelinger i midten av juni. Fire av disse gikk til MN. Gratulerer til Andrej Kuznetsov, Unni Irene Fuskeland, Kenneth Hvistendahl Karlsen og José Cerca!
- SPARK Norway er UiO:Livsvitenskap sitt innovasjonsprogram for helserelatert livsvitenskap. Seks nye team ble tatt opp i programmet denne våren. To av dem er fra MN. Gratulerer til Carmen Herrera, Pål Falnes, Steven Ray Wilson og Stig Pedersen Bjergaard!
Fakultetsledelsen
Denne våren var det tid for nytt dekanvalg. Da fristen løp ut 2. april, hadde det kun kommet inn forslag på sittende dekanat for ny periode 1.1.2025–31.12.2028. Forslaget ble enstemmig godkjent av fakultetsstyret 17. april 2024. Vi takker for tilliten, og gleder oss til å ta fatt på en ny periode! Vår valgplattform gir retning for hva vi ønsker å prioritere de neste fire årene.
Vi er glade for at assisterende fakultetsdirektør, Eva Mjelde, var på plass som ny fakultetsdirektør fra 1. mars. Og fra 1. september er vi heldige og kan ønske Carina Hundhammer velkommen som direktør for samfunns- og næringslivskontakt ved fakultetet. Jeg ser frem til fire nye år som dekan sammen med dette flotte teamet!
Økonomi
Det er krevende økonomiske tider for hele offentlig sektor inkludert UH-sektoren. Dette merkes godt også på MN, og det jobbes målrettet på alle instituttene for å få budsjettene i balanse. Innstramminger vil prege oss i en tid fremover; samtidig må vi ikke miste styringsfart og evne til strategisk tenkning og nyskapning. For å forsterke og bygge ny virksomhet må vi også evne å legge ned aktiviteter. Dét er utfordrende for et fakultet som har bygget aktivitet systematisk over lang tid, med jevn vekst som normalen.
Situasjonen krever samarbeid og innsats på mange nivåer, og at vi drar i samme retning. Fakultetets styrke er vår størrelse, vår kompetanse og vår betydning for samfunnsutviklingen, med digital og grønn omstilling. Dét gir oss et mulighetsrom som vi må forvalte godt i en trang tid. Instituttlederne og dekanat jobber tett sammen om utviklingen, med gjensidig forpliktelse for å ivareta fakultetets virksomhet innenfor en helhetlig, realfaglig fagstrategi.

Thank you for a great spring semester!
It has been an eventful first half of the year at the Faculty, with lots of activity at our Departments. We are preparing to move into a new building, working on applications and committee work – while teaching, mentoring, researching, and managing continue as usual. Thank you to all of you! Here are some highlights from this spring's activities:
IBV moving into the Life Science Building
The Faculty was delighted when the University Board allowed the Department of Biosciences (IBV) to be part of the move into the Life Science Building. The construction is progressing rapidly, and the move-in date in 2026 remains on schedule. Many have worked hard this semester to figure out the logistics between the Departments of Chemistry, Pharmacy and Biosciences, and the activities moving in from the Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry. In addition, we have worked hard on the equipment processes, investing several hundred million dollars in core facilities and mission-critical equipment for research and teaching in the new building. Our Rector is particularly concerned that these investments yield benefits by meeting the societal and impact goals set, and by establishing interdisciplinary collaboration that results in convergence at UiO. To stimulate this, they has personally led the establishment of thematic priority areas within life sciences and mechanisms for collaboration across academic communities inside and outside the building. We are close to finalizing this foundational work, and now we await the important decisions to be made by the University Board after summer break.
Research
One of the highlights at the Faculty was in May when we signed a cooperation agreement with the Niels Bohr Institute at the University of Copenhagen on quantum technology, in the presence of the Danish royal couple and our Crown Prince Haakon. The Danes are world leaders in quantum technology, so this collaboration is very positive for us. The goal is for the collaboration to contribute to operationalizing our research and to prepare us to play a prominent role in the field of quantum technology. Quantum technology will become an important part of the Faculty's work going forward, as we aim to position ourselves as a strong unit for future-oriented technologies by highlighting our strong technology environments in a collective effort.
Outreach activities
In April, we had two important visits at the Faculty: The Department of Governance in Higher Education and Research Institutions, and the Finance section from the Ministry of Education came to learn more about our research activity, teaching, and other projects. It was a good meeting where we had the opportunity to showcase some of our excellent researchers in quantum technology, electronics, and machine learning. The Education and Research Committee of the Norwegian Labour Party heard about the great potential of basic research, with presentations from the Faculty's new research center for nuclear technology, an introduction to quantum physics and the great opportunities of quantum technology, and a concluding visit to the wave laboratory at the Department of Mathematics.
Education
This year's application numbers showed a pleasing increase in applications to our Master's programs, and it now looks like we will fill our Master's spaces – for the first time in several years! This is very gratifying and important, both because society desperately needs our graduates in science and technology, but also because the basic funding of the higher education sector from the Ministry of Education will now be based on our educational missions and supervising graduates.
The new Bachelor's programs at the Department of Mathematics also had a good reception among applicants. Congratulations, this looks promising! And in May, UiO, through the Faculty of Educational Sciences, received a dispensation from the Ministry of Education to offer a new professional-focused Master's program with teacher training already from the upcoming autumn. It will be a new opportunity to educate science teachers, and the program quickly became popular and received many applicants – also for mathematics and science education.
Prizes and Awards
Also this semester, several talented individuals from the MN Faculty have received prizes and awards – here are some of them:
- Our Dean of Studies, Knut Mørken, received NOKUT's honorary prize for his exceptional efforts to ensure and develop the quality of Norwegian higher education. Congratulations!
- Three out of UiO's five prizes this year go to MN: The Research Prize to Ingunn Kathrine Wehus and Hans Kristian Kamfjord Eriksen at the Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics, The Education Prize to Omid Mirmotahari at the Department of Informatics, and the Innovation Prize to Svein-Erik Hamran at the Department of Technology Systems. The prizes will be awarded at UiO's annual celebration in the Aula on September 2. Johannes Røsok Eskilt at the Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics will also receive the H.M. The King's Gold Medal for outstanding young researchers. Congratulations!

- Trond Helge Torsvik received the most prestigious prize in geosciences – the Wollaston Medal from the Geological Society of London. He is in good company! Previous winners include Charles Darwin and UiO's first Rector, Waldemar Christopher Brøgger. Congratulations!
- Hans Kristian Eriksen has been awarded an ERC Advanced Grant in cosmology. This is his third ERC grant – an exceptional achievement! Congratulations!
- Kent Andre Mardal has received an ERC Advanced Grant in computational science. Congratulations!
- Henrik Hovde Sønsteby has been awarded a prize from the industry by the software company Intel for his fundamental research on complex oxides. Congratulations!
- Lena Tallaksen has been awarded the International Hydrology Prize 2024, as the first Norwegian recipient of the award. Congratulations!
- UiO received five FRIPRO grants in mid-June. Four of these went to MN. Congratulations to Andrej Kuznetsov, Unni Irene Fuskeland, Kenneth Hvistendahl Karlsen, and José Cerca!
- SPARK Norway is UiO:Life Science's innovation program for health-related life sciences. Six new teams were admitted to the program this spring. Two of them are from MN. Congratulations to Carmen Herrera, Pål Falnes, Steven Ray Wilson, and Stig Pedersen Bjergaard!
Faculty Leadership
This spring was the time for a new Dean election. By the deadline of April 2, only a proposal was for the current deanship for the new period January 1, 2025–December 31, 2028 had been received. The proposal was unanimously approved by the faculty board on April 17, 2024. We thank you for your trust and look forward to embarking on a new period! Our election platform provides direction for what we prioritize in the next four years.
We are pleased that Assistant Faculty Director, Eva Mjelde, has taken on the role of the new Faculty Director as of March 1. And from September 1, we are fortunate to welcome Carina Hundhammer as the Director for Business Cooperation and Community Engagement at the Faculty. I look forward to four new years as the dean together with this fantastic team!
Economy
These are demanding economic times for the entire public sector, including the higher education sector. This is also keenly felt at MN, and there is targeted work at all the departments to balance the budgets. Cutbacks will characterize us in the time ahead, but at the same time, we must not lose momentum and the ability for strategic thinking and innovation. To strengthen and build new activities, we must also be able to phase out existing activities. This is challenging for a faculty that has systematically built-up activities over a long period, with steady growth as the norm.
The situation requires collaboration and effort at many levels, and we all work towards the same goals. The strength of the faculty lies in our size, our expertise, and our significance for societal development, including digital and green transformation. This gives us a range of opportunities that we must manage well in difficult times. Department heads and the Dean's office work closely together on development, with a mutual commitment to safeguard the activities of the Faculty within a comprehensive, science-based strategy.
