In loving memory

It was with great sadness that we learned that our PhD student, Proscovia (Prossy) Suubi Nantongo, passed away due to a heart failure on July 11. She was buried at her ancestral home in the Mityana district, west of Kampala, on July 14

Prossy came to us as an enthusiastic PhD student with a sincere passion for special needs studies. She was an experienced lecturer in the Section of Hearing Impairment at Kyambogo University in Kampala. For several years, she was also a sign language interpreter in the Ugandan parliament. After getting her MA from the University of Oslo in 2008, she began seeking out a PhD opportunity and found the ENABLE project in 2014. She accepted the challenge both “excited and humbled.” Her own words “excited and humbled” characterise her engagement on both personal and professional levels. We will forever remember her smile, enthusiasm and warmth. Her premature death is a great loss for her eight-year-old son Paul, her extended family and the “ENABLE family” in Kampala, Dar es Salaam, Nairobi and Oslo.

Prossy was writing a thesis consisting of a collection of articles, and two of her articles were published. On publishing her second article, she made a short presentation filmed at the Kyambogo campus

We remember her with fondness, and we express our sincerest condolences to Paul, who has lost a loving mother.
