Food & Paper: Metre-on-metre interactions – analysing the rhythms of rap flows (Oddekalv)

Doctoral Research Fellow Kjell Andreas Oddekalv at RITMO will give a talk on "Metre-on-metre interactions – analysing the rhythms of rap flows."

Kjell Andreas Oddekalv

Abstract

This Food & Paper-session is a "rerun" of a collaborative session Kjell Andreas did at the "Breaking Rules"-conference of the European Hip Hop Studies Network this past weekend. Together with the virtual audience, Kjell Andreas gives an example of an analysis of a rap flow - the rhythms of the words and rhymes in a piece of rap music. The object of study in this session is the first verse of Chance the Rapper's "Do You Remember" from the 2019 album "The Big Day". For the sake of time this adapted talk, there will be less collaborative analysis and more one-way-lecturing, with an added discussion on presenting analysis for and together with a group of scholars from varying disciplines.
