Software Resources

Some information about the software we are using during the NordicSMC Winter School.

Matlab

Several of the tutorials will use Matlab:

Accessing Matlab at UiO

If you do not have Matlab installed/accessible from your home institution, you can log in and use Matlab on kiosk.uio.no (don't forget to add the prefix "uio\" before your user name).

Next, select the "Analysis" tab and select MATLAB. This will download a file: club-matlab-...rdp that you can run using an RDP-client to launch Matlab. We suggest to use one of these clients:

If needed (hopefully not), see here for more information on using remote desktop connections.

Introduction to Matlab

Once you have launched Matlab, a window appears that contains multiple panels. One of the panel (probably the biggest one, at the centre), is titled "Command Window". This is where you write command and see results and messages returned by Matlab.

You might see at the top of the Command Window a yellow banner saying "New to MATLAB? See resources for Getting Started." Just click on that link.

(Alternatively, in the Command Window, type "doc" and press enter. This launches a Help window. On the right, click "Getting Started with MATLAB".)

We suggest to have a quick look at all the Tutorials.

How to download toolboxes using Matlab via Remote Desktop

By using Matlab via the Remote Desktop, your files are located in a remote server. So if you want to install toolboxes, you need to download those toolboxes via Remote Desktop as well.

To do so, you need to open an Internet browser on kiosk.uio.no: Under the "Office" tab, you will find "Internet Explorer". Again, this should download a RDP file that you need to open to launch the browser:

To install MoCap toolbox for instance, do a web search "mocap toolbox" via that browser from the Remote Desktop. You should arrive to the MoCap Toolbox webpage. Scroll down and click on "Version 1.5".

You are asked to fill a form to download the toolbox.

If you have some trouble entering some particular characters, see paragraph below.

Click then on "Download". Next page, click on "Download Version 1.5". Internet Explorer ask "What do you want to do with MoCapToolbox_v1.5.zip?" Click "Open". This should open a File Explorer window showing the content of that zip file. Select the Extract tab and click on "Extract all" You can choose to extract to the default address "m:\pc\dokumenter\MoCapToolbox_v1.5".

Now the toolbox folder is properly downloaded and you will be able to access it from Matlab. Congratulations!

If you have trouble entering certains characters (such as @, [, etc.) using the Remote Desktop protocol

Copy the character from anywhere (even outside of Remote Desktop, no problem) then paste inside your Remote Desktop application (Internet Explorer, Matlab, ...)

For instance select one of the following characters directly from here: @ [ ] { }
