FIL4210 – Epistemology and philosophy of science

Course content
The content of the course will vary from year to year, but it will be based on current central problems within epistemology and philosophy of science. The seminar will be based on philosophical texts, current relevant research articles and original texts.
Learning outcome
To complete the course the student is expected to:
- have good knowledge of the core texts for the course
- be able to apply knowledge of the course area in order to critically evaluate new research contributions in the literature.
- be able to discuss the philosophical issues covered in the course in a critical and professional manner, both orally and in writing.
- write an essay between 10 and 15 A4 pages long, answering a precise question, with a clear, self-developed argumentative structure, demonstrating the student's progress in understanding the course area.

Teaching
28 hours of seminar.
Teaching takes place throughout the semester with two hours per week. Active participation from the students throughout the seminar is expected.
Compulsory tuition activities:
As part of this course’s tuition activities, students will be required to complete a short written piece, to be delivered as a 20-25 minute oral presentation, an oral response to a peer’s presentation, and two drafts of a major essay. The final grade for the course will be based on the final version of the essay.
All these obligatory activities must be approved in order for the students to be able to hand in their semester essay. If the oral presentation or one of the draft shouldn't be approved, the students will be given a second chance.

Examination
A semester essay of approximately 16-20 pages à 2.300 characters, excl. bibliography. The topic must be approved of by the responsible teacher.
The essay is to be handed in in Fronter within the deadline published on the semester pages.
In order for you to qualify for the final examination, all compulsory tuition activities must be approved by the teacher.
