GRE2400 – Reading Greek Texts
Course content
We will read one or more texts that are connected by genre, period, theme and/or author. The text(s) are read in parallel with a significant amount of secondary literature that gives insight into different approaches (theoretical, methodological, hermeneutical) to the chosen topic. The syllabus will vary from semester to semester.
Learning outcome
When you have completed this course, you are able to:
- translate the course text(s) from Greek to Norwegian.
- analyze the course text(s) with an eye to text critical, linguistic, literary, historical, philosophical, and/or other relevant aspects.
- discuss aspects of the texts within an academic community.

Formal prerequisite knowledge
GRE1001 – Innføring i gresk I or GRE4001 – Innføring i gresk I for masterstudenter (or equivalent)
GRE1002 – Innføring i gresk II (or equivalent)
Recommended previous knowledge
We recommend that you have taken 40 credits in Greek before taking this course.
Teaching
14 double hours of seminar teaching throughout the semester.
In the autumn of 2023, the subject is jointly taught with GRE4317 – Greek Prose I
The teaching format requires active participation from the students, and we expect you to come prepared. The preparation material is posted in Canvas well in advance of the seminars.
Examination
Folder, which consists of the following:
3 smaller assignments (each on approx. 3 pages of 2300 characters/page, not including title page and bibliography), evenly distributed over the semester.
Submit assignments in Inspera: You submit your assignment in the digital examination system Inspera. Read about how to submit your assignment.
Language of examination
You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English. If you would prefer to have the exam text in English, you may apply to the course administrators.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system
