Use Coates and Reichberg et al. to answer the following question to be discussed in the seminar: Which Christian and pre-Christian writers/traditions are most relevant for the historical exploration of the main elements of the ethics of war as they are presented in Coates?

17.02.2010Torkel Brekke   Wednesday 12:15 - 14:00, Sem rom 810 Nils Treschows hus   Seminar  The question for this seminar concerns the possible similarities between the ethics of war in Islam and Christianity. Have Muslim legal and ethical thinkers produced moral norms and standards concerning war that can be compared to those we have explored in the Christian tradition? Does the tradition of jihad as it is expounded by Muslim legal scholars have something in common with the just war tradition? As the basis for our discussion, we use Kelsay in Brekke and the lecture on Islam.

Have Hindu legal and ethical thinkers produced moral norms and standards concerning war that can be compared to those we have explored in the Christian tradition? Does the tradition of dharmayuddha as it is expounded in the great epics (Mahabharata and Ramayana) have something in common with the just war tradition? As the basis for our discussion, we use Brekke in Brekke and the lecture on Hinduism.
