Some students have asked if it is OK to submit more than five pages of project proposal. You may write longer, if it is spent on actual plans and decisions for the thesis work. Make certain that you don't write too much introduction. A good rule of thumb is that the research question should be at the first page.

And don't feel that you have to. Three pages can be enough.

We have had a lot of bad luck this semester, which leads to changes. The literature list is postponed du to Signe Brandsæter's illness. New date will be announced. The announced assignment 2 is cancelled due to Anders' illness. Please take care to study how to reference literature on your own.

Dear students, Anders Fagerjord has broken his finger and thus it may take some time before you all receive comments on your text assignments, as he has problems typing at the moment. Not to worry, you will receive feedback!

Changes to the teaching plan . Unfortunately, the changes to the teaching plan never ceases. We have postponed the lecture and paper on Norris et.al. Also notice that there will be seminars from 10.00 to 16.00 on 12 and 26 October. The library course is still not scheduled, but we are working on it.

You are expected to hand in your thoughts on a thesis topic by 28 September. We do not want anything specific at this point, just a rough area or topic, such as "social media in the elections," or "films by Martin Scorsese", or "early Norwegian comic books". This is to inspire you to start thinking about your thesis, and to put you in a group together with students with similar interests. The topic is to be handed in using the "test" (or "prøve") in blyant.uio.no.

Have you started to think about your thesis subject? A first, rough draft is to be handed in via Fronter.uio.no no later than 28 September. You should also note that you will be writing two short papers in October, and in order to do that, you need to read the books on the reading list. You will find details in the detailed teaching plan .

So you want to write a master's thesis? But what is a thesis, anyway. Anders tries to answer that in the podcast What is a master's thesis , which also contains a link to hundreds of theses you can read for free on the Web.

There was an error in the previous message (which is corrected now). Correct date is Wednesday 31 August.

There is no lecture on Wednesday 24 August. First meeting: Wednesday 31 august 10.15-12.00, room 205. This will be a "Research marketplace," a session where senior researchers present research projects in the hope that students will join the projects and write their master's theses as part of the project.

We are working hard to put the very last details of the teaching plan in place, and will publish it on Monday 22 August.

Welcome to the master's programme, we look forward to meeting you in August! It's going to be a busy semester, so you could do a lot worse than starting to read early. We recommend beginning to read Henry Jenkins' Convergence Culture (NYU Press, 2006) before the semester starts.
