Welcome & Preparatory Assignment

Dear students in the International Development Studies course,

Welcome to the 2016 International Summer School!

The International Development Studies course is work-intensive, and your work starts prior to coming to Norway. Your fellow students come from all over the world, and an important part of the course is sharing your different experiences.

In the first week of the course you will present the most important development problems of your country according to your own view, at a mandatory 3-day trip to the Student Cottage in the forest north of Oslo. Please select only two or three problems because you will have only 20 minutes for your presentation. You must prepare for this before you come to Oslo.

Throughout the course you will be working in groups according to selected themes. The themes will be chosen in the first week by all the students in the course and presented for debate in the next to last week. Thereafter each group shall finalize a paper on their theme (maximum 20 pages).

This paper must be accepted by the course leader before you will be allowed to take the exam. It is useful before you come here for you to reflect upon the theme that you will suggest for group work, and to bring some material that can be used for the group paper.

A detailed course schedule will be handed out on the first day of class. You can also see the course schedule in the semester page for summer 2016.

We wish you good luck with you preparation and look forward to meet you this summer!

Yours sincerely,

Anders Iversen, Course Leader

Apabeloi Mbape, Course assistant
