Course content

This course includes a theoretical part and practical field work.

The theory part focuses on: Planning of geological fieldwork, review of required personal field equipment and how it is used, writing a geological field diary, how to describe different rocks and geological boundaries, mapping strategy in light of the fieldwork purpose, various types of geological maps and the relationship between the map and different geological processes. In connection with the theoretical part is it weekly exercises to be approved.

The field part include: Up to 10 field days with collection and analysis of geological data in the context of field mapping. Up to 3 geological reports with associated geological map and profile.

Learning outcome

You will have an in-depth introduction to planning and collection of geological and geophysical data, and compilation of the collected data data in a report.

Admission

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

This course admits a Maximum of 36 students. If the number of applicants exceeds this capacity, applicants will be prioritized in the following order:

1. Students in the bachelor programme Geofag: geologi, geofysikk og geografi, programme option Geologi og geofysikk
2. Students in the bachelor programme Geofag: geologi, geofysikk og geografi, programme option Geografi og hydrologi
3. Other bachelor students at the MN Faculty
4. New single course students

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

• Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2

And in addition one of these:

• Physics (1+2)
• Chemistry (1+2)
• Biology (1+2)
• Information technology (1+2)
• Geosciences (1+2)
• Technology and theories of research (1+2)

The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies (in Norwegian).

• GEO1010 – Physical geography (discontinued)
• GEO1020 – Geological processes and materials (discontinued)

The following courses must be taken before the field trip/excursion in GEL2150:

• HMS0504 – Field Safety OR MNHMS0015FS – Introduction to Field Safety (discontinued)

For students taking GEL2150 spring 2015 or later, to have GEL2150 included in your degree you must first pass the following HSE courses:

• MNHMS0015 – Introduction to Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) (discontinued) OR HMS0501 – Safety and Physical Environment and HMS0502 – Positive Learning Environment and HMS0507 – Fire Safety
• HMS0504 – Field Safety OR MNHMS0015FS – Introduction to Field Safety (discontinued)

Teaching

Lectures and exercises with obligatory problem solving, up to 10 days with field work during the course with assignment of obligatory field reports. All assignments must be approved before you can participate in the field work.

Attendance at the first lecture is compulsory. Students who fail to meet, are considered to have withdrawn from the course unless they have previously given notice to the Studies administration, email address: studieinfo@geo.uio.no

To attend the field trip/excursion  it is required that the following course is passed:

• HMS0504 – Field Safety OR MNHMS0015FS – Introduction to Field Safety (discontinued)

You will need to provide documentation that you have passed HMS0504 when you attend the field trip/excursion.

As the teaching involves laboratory and/or field work, you should consider taking out a separate travel and personal risk insurance. Read about your insurance cover as a student.

Examination

All term papers and field reports must be approved in order to pass.

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.

Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses: GEO3010 – Field and Mapping Course
