Mapping of high traffic density areas in maritime industry Knowing the traffic density levels over a particular area is of crucial importance for the safety of navigation in sea, and particularly for autonomous vessels. The objective of this project is to build accurate traffic density maps over a medium to large size area of interest, capable of identifying the possible hotspot locations. This project is based on the use of historical Automatic Identification System (AIS) data; this rich database is huge and contains the real records of locations and characteristics of vessels. The student working on this project will develop methods for estimating traffic density over a given area, and also learn how to automatize reading I/O files and handle really large data in the most efficient way, in addition to visualization and matching with world maps for better illustration. Supervision: Azzeddine Bakdi and Ingrid Glad
