Hi, 

I have clarified the presentation of questions Part I and Part II (but none of the answers change) based the discussion questions I have received from seminar participants. Hence, those students who attended seminar 5 on MONDAY can drop by my office i.e. 1041 during regular work hours and collect the revised solution keys. Note, none of the solutions change.

Requate (2005) provides the background for the next lecture, and the model that we’ll go through is taken from Hoel (2010).

• 4th seminar will be held in week 16
• 5th seminar will be in week 17
• 6th seminar will be in week 19.

NOTE! an error in the table: In week 19 there will be only 1 seminar on MONDAY ( because Wed 8/5/13 is holiday), if anyone has problem with coming on monday 6th of may send me an email at alice.ciccone@econ.uio.no and we will see what we can do.

• For next lecture, please read the article by Weitzman (1974), Prices vs Quantities in addition to chapter 7 in Perman et al (chapter 8 in the 2003 edition).

• Assignment: The article by Goulder, Markets for Pollution Allowances: What Are the (New) Lessons? in the current issue of the JEP discusses cap-and-trade systems. Read it and then write down a research question suitable for a master thesis. If you want, you can then send it to me. Florian

Dear students! Three things again:

• The next lecture is in Seminarrom 830, 8. etasje, Eilert Sundt hus.

• In preparation for that lecture 4, I'd like you to look at the table criteria for control instruments and think about how you would rank them, and why. Come up with examples how the ranking differs with different pollution problems.

• Also in preparation for that lecture, think about how to set up and derive the firm's first-order-condition 1.) under no regulation, 2.) given a fixed cap, 3.) facing a tax, 4.) facing a subsidy, and 5.) given a tradable permit.

Dear students! Three things:

• Lectures will from now on be in Seminarrom 220, 2. etasje, Eilert Sundt hus. Same time, but nicer place.

• Accordingly, I will put more emphasis on discussion. In preparation for next lecture, I'd like you to think a little about the following problem: Suppose you were an advisor to Ullern / Søndre Nordstrand, Oslo fylke, or the central government, and the question is where to locate a waste treatment plant. How would you design an economic model to inform this decision? Would your model/decision depend on whom you advice?

• The first seminar problem set and slides for the third lecture have been posted.
