Course content

The course on East Asia takes a closer look at questions raised in SOSANT1100 – Regional etnografi: Jordens folk og kulturelt mangfold (discontinued). The course will address four themes: 1) cultures, states, and histories 2) self, gender and sentiment 3) geographies, work and sociality 4) religions, modernities, populations.

The course will be taught in English.

Learning outcome

The course provides important regional knowledge for students studying anthropology. The course is also relevant for students from other programs who are interested in East Asia.

Recommended previous knowledge

SOSANT1000 – Innføring i sosialantropologi and SOSANT1100 – Regional etnografi: Jordens folk og kulturelt mangfold (discontinued) are recommended but not required before taking this course.

Overlapping courses

SOSANT11xx gir 5 sp reduksjon mot SOSANT1101, men man kan søke om å få beholde sp dersom man tar en annen regionalfordypning enn man hadde fra før.

Teaching

Access to teaching

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

Examination

Students are graded on the basis of a three-hour examination.

"Privatister" take the same exam as ordinary students.

Examination support material

No examination support material is allowed.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
