Part I. Short answers (Answer three of the four questions).
a) What are the main tenets of liberal intergovernmentalism and how has this theoretical approach been used to explain European integration?
b) What are the main characteristics of EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP)?
c) Describe the development of EU internal climate policy, focusing on the EU Emissions Trading System.
d) Give a brief description of the development of the main party groups in the European Parliament.
Part II. Essay. Answer either Question #1 or Question #2:
1. EU party system
Give a brief description of the development of the main party groups in the European Parliament. What are the main dimensions of party competition in the European Parliament? Discuss to what extent Eastern enlargement has altered the EU party system.
2. EU foreign and security policy
Discuss the extent to which the EU is an actor in international politics by applying one or several of the main theoretical approaches from the literature. Use examples that underpin the approach chosen and discuss the strengths and the weaknesses of the EU’s “actorness” (capacity to act).
