TFF4260 – Youth Ministry, Glocality and Ecclesiology

Course content
During the last decades, Youth Ministry (YM) has emerged not only as a distinct field of practice, but also as an ecumenical research field in the interaction surfaces between practical theology, ecclesiology and religious education. Throughout this course, YM will be explored both from research perspective both as a global phenomenon and as local practices, with emphasis on the tensions and fusions between the local and the global – addressed by the term glocality. Critical conversations on contextualization and ecclesiology will take place during the course. Further, we will explore and discuss the role of empirical research in the development of YM practices and theologies.
Learning outcome
Trough this course, students will get to know current trends in European, American and African research on Youth Ministry. They should be able to identify problem areas and challenges in the field of YM, and discuss YM practices and ecclesiologies in critical, constructive and creative ways, reflecting in the interaction surfaces between local practices, own experiences and research literature.
Admission
Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.
Students enrolled in other Master's Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.

Prerequisites
Recommended previous knowledge
The course presupposes introductory knowledge of systematic theology. The language of the teaching activities and compulsory reading list is normally English, but German and Norwegian may be accepted for parts of the reading list (contact birgitte.lerheim@teologi.uio.no regarding this).
Teaching
The course will be given throughout the whole semester with lectures and seminar teaching.
Active participation in the seminar is required, and the student’s own experiences and/or local contexts will play a role in the learning activities.
Mandatory requirements:
Two obligatory short papers are to be presented in class during the semester.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Examination
Three day home exam 3000 - 4000 words.

You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in English.You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
