Why choose the specialisation in English didactics?
The specialisation in English didactics gives you advanced, research-based knowledge about English as a school subject in Norway. This specialisation focuses on the teaching and learning of basic skills in English (reading, writing, listening, speaking, digital) as well as aspects of quality instruction in English secondary classrooms, related to the teaching of culture, society, language, and literature. Throughout this specialisation you will get knowledge about various methods for school research, which you can utilise in your work with your Master’s thesis in English didactics (Teaching English).
Learning outcomes
After finishing the specialisation in English didactics you will have:
Knowledge about
- teaching and learning in English as a school subject in Norway
- discipline topics and basic skills in the English classroom
- observation of English classrooms in secondary schools
- combinations of qualitative and quantitative methods in English didactics research
- ethical guidelines for educational research
Skills to
- read and understand scientific literature in English didactics
- analyse and discuss English classroom observations
- use research literature in own writing and master rules for academic writing
- conduct an independent and supervised research project in English didactics in line with ethical guidelines
Competence to
- continuously develop your teacher professionalism in English as a school subject
- apply research-based knowledge in the development of your English teaching practices
Programme structure
The specialization in English didactics make up the last three semesters in the programme (8th, 9th and 10th semester) and consists of a total of 90 credits, of which 30 credits are the master thesis.The courses included in the course of study are mandatory, but the order of semesters in which they appear are recommended. In the recommended course structure we guarantee that teaching does not collide. If you do not wish to follow the recommended course structure, please contact the study administration in the Teacher Education Programme (Lektorprogrammet).
The elective courses can be chosen from this list. Please note that not all courses will be given every semester.

Progression requirements
In addition to the regular progression requirements that apply to all programme students at UiO, students in the teacher education programme must meet progression requirements before they can start PROF3025 in the 6th semester and before starting their Master specialisation in the 8th semester.
