Editorial: The Dean's Christmas greeting 2022

In this latest editorial, Dean Ivar Prydz Gladhaug would like to take this opportunity to summarise his four-year tenure as Dean and wish all employees and students a Merry Christmas.

The Dean would like to thank each of you for your hard work, constructive collaboration and last but not least, all your contributions to making our faculty a great place to work. Best of luck to the new Dean’s office starting in January.

New sustainability initiative at MED

At the last meeting of the year, Gladhaug and faculty board member Engebretsen decided to establish the Unit for Sustainable Health, which is a new knowledge cluster at MED. The unit will highlight challenges, discussions and sustainable solutions to global and local health issues. From 1 January 2023, Eivind Engebretsen will become Sustainability Director and head of the unit, which consists of three independent centres with joint management. Read more.

Rosvold will become the new Head of Institute at Helsam

Professor Elin Olaug Rosvold has been appointed the new Head of Institute. Elin Rosvold will start at the Institute of Health and Society as Head of Institute at HELSAM on 1 January 2023. In order to get to know the employees, their tasks and projects, Rosvold will visit all departments and sections at the Institute on the starting date. “I want to be visible at the Institute and I’m looking forward to coming back and meeting both old and new employees,” she says.

Committee for equality and diversity

The faculty has set up a committee that will be a driving force for equality and diversity work at the faculty. On 13 December they had their first meeting. Tony Joakim Ananiassen Sandset heads the committee. They will be a driving force for the MED faculty to reflect the society we are a part of. Inequality in gender, age, competence, cultural background, experience, functional ability, sexual orientation, social class, ethnicity and outlook on life gives us multiple perspectives and makes us better equipped to solve challenges and will promote sustainability, innovation and value creation. Project on misconduct in scientific research and research integrity to get three million Euros

The project will be coordinated from University of Oslo (UiO) by Professor Rosemarie de La Cruz Bernabe at the Centre for Medical Ethics. “Misconduct in scientific research is an exciting subject. In the past, the approach to studies of this kind has been narrow. The research does not support how we are approaching the subject today,” says Bernabe.

UiO:Life sciences – Celebrating SPARK projects

During 2022, five projects completed the SPARK Norway innovation programme. On Wednesday 7 December, there was a celebration of the SPARK Norway projects with the conferring of diplomas and presentations. There was also a winner of the Vaccibody Innovation Award 2022 announced. The competition was strong but the top prize wen to the project, Slimstitch - A medical device for obesity treatment. The winning team consists of Magnus Løberg and Christer Tønnesen. Read more.

Students of Public Health Ethics at UiO are important for finding solutions to the challenges of the future

The Master’s Programme in Public Health Science and Epidemiology is one of the few Master’s programmes in Norway offering a separate course in public health ethics.

Trainees at the the Norwegian Directorate of Health are working on international EU projects

At the Norwegian Directorate of Health, Niccolò Morgante and Pietro Falco are working on the EU’s international major investment in health: The EU4Health programme. “Supervised professional teaching is a great way to learn something new. You gain knowledge, experience and build networks and also add something to your career,” says Pietro. Read more.

• UiO: Working hours at Christmas. Do you look forward to slowing down a little in the coming holiday season? In addition to the public holidays, UiO employees receive one extra day off between Christmas and New Year. You can also start the working day at 10.00 a.m. during Christmas, where working conditions permit.

• UiO: Christmas discount for UiO employees in the museum shop at the History Museum (link in Norwegian). Do your Christmas shopping at the Historical Museum and buy unique gifts you won't find anywhere else. UiO employees get a 20% discount on books, 10% on this year's book publications, and a 30% discount on other goods until Christmas.

• Uniforum: UiO is distributing energy costs of NOK 160 million on the basis of area (link in Norwegian). In 2023, UiO will have ad additional NOK 160 million in energy costs. These costs are distributed among the units on the basis of the size of the area they have at their disposal. This was adopted by the University Board yesterday.

• UiO: Gørbitz, Director of Life Science (link in Norwegian). Carl Henrik Gørbitz will continue as Director of UiO:Life Science for another four years.

• The DIASA 2 study, led by Professor Kåre Birkeland, seeks to find better ways to prevent and treat diabetes in people of South Asian origin in particular, and in women who previously had gestational diabetes in general. Now they are looking for healthy control subjects for their diabetes study (link in Norwegian).

•  18 January  Semester kick-off for the MED faculty
   at 14.30-16 Store Aud RH, at 16-18  in the Student canteen, Domus Medica. The new dean and her team welcomes all staff and students at the faculty to the kick-off for the spring semester 2023. The event is divided into two: There will be a lecture in the Store auditorium at Rikshospitalet first, mingling, dining and entertainment at the Oslo medical girls' choir in Domus Medica afterwards.

• 2 and 3 February 2023: Management Conference 2023 - the most important meeting place for managers in health service! How to lead in the face of change and how to face the future?   • The Health Leadership Award 2023 is awarded on the first day of the conference by Ingvild Kjerkol, Minister of Health and Care and NSH's chairman Anders Frafjord. Nominate your candidate (link in Norwegian).

• Health innovation and entrepreneurship: Apply for admission to the Health Innovation School's course 1 in spring 2023. How can innovation be utilised for benefit in clinical contexts? The course is for PhD students and Postdoctoral Fellows, as well as young Associate Professors, Assistant Professors, Clinicians and Researchers. The School of Health Innovation covers all costs. Read more about the course and admission criteria and search for entrance and admission information.
  The application deadline is 3 February 2023.

• 13. - 15. februar: Welcome to the biggest meeting place for life science in Norway!

Helsam: Infections are the main cause of hydrocephalus in African children by Mathilde Coraline Aarvold Bakke. In a systematic review article published in Lancet Global Health, PhD candidate Camilla Grøver Aukrust and colleagues have mapped the causes of hydrocephalus in African children.
 

Medisinbloggen: What’s the matter with the Regular GP Scheme? in Norwegian by Hans-Christian Myklestul. For many years now, there has been talk of a GP crisis. But does it concern you? Perhaps. A regular GP can prevent hospitalisation and premature death.

Helsam: Horizon scanning – useful for identifying new healthcare services? by Mathilde Coraline Aarvold Bakke. – Can horizon scanning be used to identify new and innovative health services? This has been investigated by researchers at NORCHER – Norwegian Centre for Health Services Research.
