Dear IN5570 students,

Unfortunately, the feedback on Oblig1 is slightly delayed; my new estimate is Friday eve.

Dear IN5570 students,

There will be no exercise session today.

You will receive feedback on Oblig 1 by Wednesday evening.

Dear IN5570 students,

After some digging around and a discussion over at Piazza, we've come up with a way to run Emerald on PlanetLab. You will find an up-to-date list of machines on the Working with Emerald page.

If you have the time, go ahead and test your Kilroy. Given that the deadline is a couple hours away, this is clearly not a requirement :-)

For now the list looks as follows:

  • cse-white.cse.chalmers.se (Gothenberg, Sweden)
  • cse-yellow.cse.chalmers.se (Gothenberg, Sweden)...

Because of problems with Planetlab, oblig1 has been reduced -- see oblig 1version 2 on the web site.

Oleks is working on a work-around - or a real solution - for Oblig2.

Dear IN5570 students,

We've run into some trouble in getting Emerald programs to run on PlanetLab. As we work to sort out these issues, you can ignore the very last part of Oblig1, which asks you to run your code on machines at a distance. You should still modify the kilroy program, and run it locally. Be wary of the difference between the move-to and fix-at constructions. What are their relative benefits and pitfalls? Which should kilroy use?

The goal of today's exercise is to help you finish Oblig 1.

Among other things, we will discuss what you should include in your report (i.e, "PDF with any comments that you have on the three exercises").

Dear IN5570 students,

As with hiho, the previously published version of kilroy was written for an earlier version of Emerald. You will find an updated version of kilroy next to the Oblig.

Please modify this version of kilroy in your submission for Oblig 1, or let us know if you (for some reason) chose to use the older version instead.

Dear IN5570 students,

I have refactored the hiho program from lecture 3 to work with the version of Emerald we currently use. You will find this hiho.txt next to Oblig 1.

Dear IN5570 students,

The exercise set for this week is up: Exercise Set 3.

Here we ask you to:

  1. Sign up for, and get started with PlanetLab.
  2. Write a couple basic distributed programs in Emerald.
  3. Get some practice with Emerald synchronization primitives.

I am in Postscript until 16:00 today if you are in need of some live support.

I have uploaded the slides, the programs hiho.m and kilroy.m, the whiteboard pictures, and the screen & voice recording of lecture F3.

See also the instructions on how to sign up for a Planetlab account. We are chaning to a new slice - the old one has a INF5510 name, but we are switching to the IN5570 one. Use whichever works, but beware that the INF5510 will disappear at some poin...

Dear IN5570 students,

In case you didn't get through Exercise Set 2, and to brace you for the next exercise set and mandatory assignment, I have now published some Notes on Exercise Set 2, which should make it easy to arrive at a concrete solution to the exercise set.

Dear IN5570 students,

I have uploaded a revised version of the slides from our previous exercises session: Exercise Session 1.

The plan for today's exercise session is for you to get through Exercise Set 2 (formerly, Exercise Set 1), and to revise some of the material from the new slides for Lecture 2 (published after the lecture).

Dear IN[59]570 students,

I have completed some new slides for yesterday's lecture, to serve as lecture notes on what was (and was not?) covered yesterday.

They can offer you yet another entry point to learning about Emerald objects and types.

Lecture 2 - Emerald Objects and Types - Oleks's new 2019 slides.pdf

Best regards,
Oleks

Dear IN[59]570 students,

Unfortunately, Eric is ill, so I will be filling in for the lecture today.

The goal of today's lecture is to introduce the Emerald type system, and basic object-oriented programming in Emerald.

See you there,
Oleks

Dear IN[59]570 students,

The first exercise session will be this afternoon at 14:15 in Postscript. You don't need anything but an open mind and your computer. The agenda for today's session is roughly as follows:

  1. Elements of Programming in This Course

  2. What Is An Emerald Node?

  3. How will you run Emerald?

  4. Survey (of you)

  5. Get Some Emerald Nodes Up and Running

    • Install, Compile, and Run an Emerald program

  6. In Emerald, What Is a Distributed System?

See you there,
Oleks

Dear IN5570/IN9570 students.

A warm welcome to Distributed Objects.

Because I am on a trip to the USA, the first lecture is scheduled for Thursday January 24th, 2019 14:15 - 16:00 in OJD 2458 Postscript - that is, there is NO LECTURE on January 17th, 2019.

The TA sessions/Hjelpelærertimer will start January 28th, 2019 - note that this is one week later than stated in the original schedule.

Sincerely,

Eric
