Please note that there was a misprint in the message about the date of the exam. The correct date is June 1, see below.

The date for the final exam has now been fixed, it will be Wednesday June 1 in room B534. This will an oral exam that lasts about 35-45 mins for each candidate. It will start with quite simple overview questions and then proceed to more demanding questions. You may write on a piece of paper or on the blackboard, and you will of course be allowed time to think if necessary. To earn a grade of A you will be expected to have a very good overview of the different topics as well as detailed technical knowledge of proofs etc. The requirements then weaken with the grade.

Those of you who intend to use this course as part of your PhD will only get a pass/fail grade, but the pass grade is roughly equivalent to a B in INF-MAT5340. That means that you should have a good grasp of the different topics and how they are connected, as well as good knowledge of the central theorems with proofs.

The problems for assignment 3 will be available soon, but since both Tom and I are travelling communication is a bit slower than usual. One of the problems will definitely be to write a procedure that computes the first derivative of a spline of degree p with knots t, if you want to get started.

A detailed plan for the lectures can be found under the heading 'Teaching' on the left. This will most definitely need to be adjusted as we go along.

Inntil videre vil derfor undervisningen foregå i

rom 1206 i Ifi1

Hilsen

Tom og Knut
