Giving a WebID user access to a service (old service)

Feide users who have moderator access to a WebID group can invite WebID and Feide users to be members of the group, and in this way they gain access to the service or services in which the group is used.

If you wish someone who does not have a Feide user or University of Oslo user account to gain access to a service, for example so as to be able to edit a joint document in Vortex, this can be done by using WebID.

  1. Check first:
    • That the service actually supports WebID.
    • That the group has been created in WebID. If not, create a group before you proceed with this guide. Please note that groups with no members are not visible in other services than at webid.uio.no.
    • That you have moderator access to, or own, the WebID group - if not you cannot add a member.
    • That the group gives the correct access to the service.
  2. Go to webid.uio.no and log on with your Feide or UiO user name and password under WebID-groups. If you do not have a Feide or UiO user name and password, you cannot create groups or invite to WebID groups.
  3. Go to Your groups and click on the WebID group to be used.
  4. Go to Invite members.
  5. Enter the e-mail address of the person who is to be given access. You can also enter the message of your choice to users.
  6. Click on Invite members.

When this has been done, each recipient will get an e-mail with information about WebID and a link to join the group. When you go to the link, you have various alternatives:

  • Log on with own Feide user, if you have one. By logging on via Feide, the Feide user will become a member of the group.
  • Log on with a previously created WebID user. By logging on in WebID, you will become a member of the group.
  • Register a new WebID user. When you have registered, the newly created WebID will become a member of the group.

Setting up a WebID group in an internet service

The group must first be created in WebID, and has to contain at least one member, as empty groups will not be visible in services. After a few minutes, the group will be accessible in services.

Since groups are handled differently from service to service, the way in which WebID groups are used also varies. In principle however, one can give access to WebID groups in the same way as for other groups in the service. The biggest difference between WebID groups and other groups is that membership must be organised from webid.uio.no and not internally within the service.
